For example, you could start with listening to '70s rock, absorbing sounds like Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Hendrix, Doors, and so on, then touch upon some Prog like Crimson, PFM, Orme, Who, until you reach the present day with Xasthur, Anathema, Gojira, Slayer.
