Damo Suzuki with Metak Network + Zu & Xabier Iriondo PhonoMetak Series#4 split 10

Great job on the recommendation and the introduction to the character. The vinyl is fantastically schizophrenic in its sound proposal, the old Damo gives a fantastic lesson in open-mindedness!

Sure, I’m a curious little kid: the only limits to my listening come from time and taste, not from labels. Thanks to Dolphy for pointing out the video: great school! I’d like to take this opportunity for a correction: the other review of the Dalek on Debaser is of "absence" (also the one following "filthy etc.").

The album is not new: it’s from 2002. In the meantime, Dalek has released another album (abandoned language), put out several singles (later collected in "deadverse"), and collaborated with various other groups from different backgrounds (among which I will only mention Faust, speaking of 70s German rock!, and ZU). The choice to review this album rather than others was made considering that: 1-) there is already a review of the subsequent "abandoned language" on Debaser; 2-) I find "from filthy..." a good balance between “experimental” flair and more “canonical” yet still valid hip-hop of the subsequent work.

Well, like any music genre, hip-hop has produced original and interesting stuff as well as banal things. As far as I'm concerned, I think that now that technologies allow you to do it without breaking the bank, exploring areas that may not have been touched before can yield pleasant surprises. After all, one of the things I love about music is that there's enough to explore for more than one lifetime. I hope you like the dalek, though!

Great review: it piques the interest of a listener unfamiliar with the album (like yours truly!) and contextualizes the musician's style (although the enlightening comparison between him and Pastorius made me think of those old Marvel comic book letters: "who's stronger, The Thing or Hulk?" :-) ). Setting aside my personal quirks, oops, I meant to say memories, I would say that even live, Swollow manages to amaze with his "understatement" and essentiality: I saw him last year alongside Carla Bley and Paolo Fresu, and his ability to play the right note at the right time was masterful, neither one more nor one less. As for the album... well, as already mentioned, I became intrigued...

For me, the quality of the content more than compensates for the quality of the recording, which is actually the worst by far among the official production of our band (but in my opinion, the oversaturated sound "enhances" the "charge" of the music). To be honest, though, I don't know how much my opinion regarding the quality of the production carries weight; as far as I'm concerned, I can listen to even the most minor recordings without too much trouble... I would also open the chapter to contributions from other debaseriani :-) !
