Alas Alas

7/10. In my opinion, this is a very pleasant work of "symphonic fusion," particularly effective in its first half, where the Canterbury echoes are more perceptible and a "Gowen-esque" sense of measure lingers, later dissipated by the redundant and not always impactful keyboard interventions, which somewhat weigh down the second suite and cause the album to lose the clarity needed to stand alongside a brilliant release like "Anabelas," rather settling into the fluctuating levels of a controversial album like "Cornonstipicum" (which is nonetheless substantially different). A "lightning" but thorough review, though I can't help but wonder, not without a hint of bitterness, how many of those "many" have truly rejoiced at the CD reissue of "Alas"...

Thank you all for the comments and to ProgRock for the warm welcome. A special greeting to my mentor Jargon, who, regarding the two albums, hits the nail on the head. The judgment has indeed depended a lot on that "charm," stemming from the dense atmospheres that continuously ooze from an album that is, in my opinion, mature, very personal, and, above all, possessing a remarkable communicative ability, emotionally overwhelming, which perfectly balances a technical boldness that would otherwise be merciless and austere, making "Epilog," as a whole, nothing short of an extraordinary gem.

Thank you once again for the thoughts on the written piece and the group. How could I disagree with you on the latter? The VdGG are certainly one of those formations that gave their best in the studio, especially because the excessive eclecticism of its members often led to adventurous cacophonic deliriums during live performances. Nevertheless, and even more so, the DVD described above acquires what I consider to be essential value for every fan, providing a precious yet, fortunately, comprehensible testimony of the live acrobatics of the Generatore during one (or rather two) of its most inspired periods. @Macaco: I told you that your message gave me a “debaserian lightning” that then automatically flowed into my notes... @Ivo: Thank you very much. As soon as I can gather some time, I would love to read your reviews, which, at first glance, seem to delve into territories particularly akin to mine ;) A warm greeting to all.

Thank you all for the kind comments, especially to Jargon for the warm welcome back, even if this is more of a fleeting appearance than a true return. Right now, it’s really impossible for me to plan a stable “de-reviewer” comeback, but I admit that I have at least one album imprinted in my mind that urgently demands justice, so sooner or later, I would love to pay tribute to it on these pages. As for the writing (which I wouldn't even dare to call a "review"), I realize it may easily come across as tedious, and I apologize for that, but I, as I’ve always emphasized, just can’t talk about only one branch of art. I enjoy describing the whole tree in detail :p @Pibroch: Yes and no. The scene you’re referring to is in the finale of "A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers," which is indeed present on this DVD, but it doesn’t belong to the main concert of "Godbluff."

Thanks to the newcomers (and also to those who have returned). @Ardalo: I have no idea what it means, but I’ll take it as a compliment, okay? ;) With this ode to art (theatrical, literary, pictorial, musical, choose your favorite) ends a journey of works that I aimed to highlight in these months on Debaser, so now I intend to take a break and step back from the scene, at least from reviewing. However, I will still appear occasionally to drop a comment, hoping there will be enough progressive reviews to do so :p Bye everyone and see you next time!

Thank you so much, Heaven (too kind), Matacà, Jargon, & MJ64. @Matacà: I really appreciate the skills you attribute to me, but as much as I love figurative art and the fusion of elements from various origins, I have always left much to be desired as a collage maker. I believe that for the successful outcome of one, a premeditated and calculated vision of the positioning of a good part of the fragments that will then form the final image is necessary. As for me, I do not possess such an organized mindset; I essentially write spontaneously, seizing an initial idea that attracts me and developing it, following the course of the connections that come to mind (sick mind), during the writing process (which I then read through countless times to remedy the nonsense that I often find myself mercilessly pouring out). Moreover, if mine were a thankless job of meticulous shifting, accurate relocating, and efficient concealing, at this point, after 62 reviews, I would have become a formidable puzzle wizard :p @Jargon: Am I wrong or is today your second DeCompleanno? If so... Happy birthday, mate! :D

Thanks to the revived Jargon :p I agree with you on 4.5; this is undoubtedly the best work of the group for me. In the writing, I avoided comparisons because I believe that, in most cases, they are just forced and misleading, especially when talking about "Postaeolian," in the continuous and pressing comparisons with Zao.

@Hymnen: Are you referring to the cover with horizontal red and yellow stripes? I didn't consider it appropriate because I preferred to talk about the tracklist of the Musea edition, focusing on the Classroom tracks. In fact, I didn't even mention "Karbok," the piece that appeared on the LP and was excluded from the CD reissue. Then, thanks to this cover, I had the excuse to showcase the group photo prominently, without needing any additional links ;)

Thank you, Lazy. @Dlf: I really appreciate it. As for the review topics, let's say that I personally prefer to use the internet to give visibility to Prog, which practically has no other means of dissemination, and I leave the spread of trash to television, which seems to be doing a "great" job on its own in this regard (even though by saying this I feel like I'm downplaying the value of your writings, which are not simply about trash, but, I would dare say, the "crème de la crème" of trash :)).

Thank you Ardalo and Supervai :D @Dlf: I'm glad you are familiar with the works I have been involved in. I certainly can't say the same about myself, as I am completely (and quite willingly) unaware of the subject of your reviews :p
