Ah... well then it has another meaning. Yes, it's true, U2 were late to the trend (they never really followed it until the '90s, which I've always appreciated), but it's a very different use of electronics compared to the standard of the Modes; it can't be called copying. Back then, almost everyone had immersed themselves in this electro/dance dimension, with pure rock left only to grunge. It was simply a way of embracing a trend while reshaping it in a fantastic manner. :)

Here, I would probably draw parallels between ZOO TV (AB’s tour) and Devotional, discussing the strong connection between images and music. In any case, ZOO TV came shortly before the other tour. [Coincidentally, Anton Corbijn, who worked to set up the structure of Devotional, had already been working closely with U2 for a long time.]

@ Gore: In my opinion, the U2 of Achtung Baby has little to do with the Mode. Especially between SOFAD and AB. Both are great works, but I don't think they share many similarities, either musically or in terms of the themes addressed.
