Afterhours Il Paese E' Reale

A piece of the Madonna, whether Sanremo or Leonkavallo, I don't share your opinions on the latest products from Afterhours (except for "I Milanesi...", which I initially liked and then it somewhat faded after a few listens), but I agree that "Il Paese è Reale" is immensely superior to Afterhours from 2000 onwards and is on par with the pieces that made me fall in love with them ("Dentro Marilyn," "1.9.9.6," "Rapace"). Post-rock format, deep lyrics (I would say profoundly deep, reminiscent of the more enigmatic works from "Hai Paura del Buio" and "Germi") and so much suggestion.

Franco Battiato La voce del padrone

A fantastic album from Battiato's golden era. It’s the Battiato who moves away from experimental music and approaches synthetic pop without losing elegance. Truly outstanding. I don’t understand how you can label Battiato’s lyrics as naìf, as they are structured, refined, and articulated like few singer-songwriters in Italy, and sometimes they even hint at a certain display of erudition. For me, this album is an eight and more, very beautiful.

@Franci: Sorry, but I didn't know you had coined the term; I still don't like it. Mine, I admit, was an avoidable attack, but it's not entirely unfounded. Of course, it might really suck for you; the problem is that it only takes a little bit of Nirvana, a little of this or a little of that, and immediately everyone goes off with cosmic terms or similar crap. Avoidable stuff that sometimes tarnishes the name of a band that makes music, modest or crap as it might be for you, but still music. And I wasn't referring to you specifically, but speaking generally when I said there are people who snub everything that's below major or MTV (you don't like pseudo-indie, do you?). The flaw of Verdena is a certain citationalism (at times almost childish and immature) that leads them to fall into the obvious, and I myself (I like some of their pieces, but I'm not crazy about them, okay?) find them at times banal or very self-referential in not wanting to be naively so. The problem is that mainstream magazines and MTV make pure gold out of these simplistic citations, and in the album, they see a masterpiece, like the Virgin Mary come down to earth. This obviously divides listeners, with exceptions: on one side, the (more or less true) consumers of independent labels who vomit, precisely, at the album, and on the other, the followers of MTV, or roughly those individuals. Verdena have always felt the impact of this, even though in this album and the previous one there has been a certain maturity (I mean, it’s not the crap of the early Verdena, because that really is stuff I don't like).

Of course, fashion never goes out, all those pseudo-indie trends that mock the music of artists who contradict your ideas. The album is modest; honestly, it’s pretty consistent with today’s standards—pleasant music at times, nothing special, that's it. I don't think we need to have discussions about post-grunge and "alternative" diatribes and mock them, because they didn’t define themselves as "Italian Nirvana" or "Teen Spirit Italian style" (but seriously, who the hell came up with that?). It’s a label that suits newspapers and various other nonsense, the band might be affected by it, but if only we could listen to music shaking off all that crap that’s been dumped on top of it, it would be a different thing.
Franz Ferdinand Tonight: Franz Ferdinand

Well, I wouldn’t say it’s a sought-after and simple album; on the contrary, it’s definitely catchy and danceable, but compared to previous works, it feels much more contaminated and, at the same time, cliched. For a revival band of the new millennium, I don’t consider this a negative attribute. I say that finally even Franz Ferdinand are making room for something new, and "Lucid Dreams" is proof of that. New, so to speak, is still something that's been heard multiple times; indeed, it’s almost an adaptation to the Anglophone post-punk territories closer to the synthesizer. At times, they seem to borrow from Last of the Pier from last year, just to say. But if they’re stealing something, in my humble opinion, they’re doing it well, because the album, fundamentally, is less banal than the previous ones, much more linked to the post-punk of the Gang of Four, and it also seems to be crafted better and more varied in recalling the style of the good old days.
The result is a modest revival, nothing more and nothing less, better than the pseudo-indie "trends," British rubbish and otherwise, that are increasingly looming. But nothing transcendent; the FF know how to play and have a certain maturity, but they belong to that big melting pot of music from the new millennium that has taken refuge in the past due to a lack of ideas, more or less consciously, and I will never stop saying it.
Beck Mellow Gold

Well, to me "Steal my Body Home" has always seemed more like a ballad representing the struggles of a drunkard about to throw up, with blurry eyes, dirty pants from the night out, and a body that just wants to be taken home.
Anyway, the album is fantastic, a progressive blend of pop, rock, and the most disparate influences. Beck is one of a kind, and here he proves it perfectly.

"I'll tell YOU: you don't like music"... this is beautiful. Judge as much as you want, you're just a slightly rougher piece of shit than the others, the important thing is to get the asshole of the moment out of your system. Well, you don't make me feel hot or cold, but if it satisfies you, if you enjoy it, (quoting Fight Club), then go ahead.
