Wide Angle Who Is Silvio Berlusconi

Yes, I think I've seen that documentary already, if it’s the one.. in my opinion we are still (for a little while) a democracy, even if laughable and inconsistent: people voted freely, but the problem is now, because from now on it will only get worse and the road to dictatorship is downhill and clear of obstacles, especially now that there’s the excuse of the crisis. Maybe I’ll be a bit apocalyptic, but the truth is that no one really gives a damn about freedom; all anyone wants is to have a full belly, distractions from their miserable lives, from the crisis, from their shitty jobs, and safe, open streets, preferably with the police gunning down the ā€œbad guys.ā€ How many times have I walked down the street and heard things like: "If it were up to me I’d reopen the ovens," or "death penalty now." To me, it’s a drift, nearly inevitable, and the knight is simply the man who seized the opportunity. People (and when I say people I mean the majority of the population) now considers pathetic figures of shit on an international level to be jokes stemming from the irony and humor of Berlusconi, now a true popstar. People know what he has done and continues to do, they know he isn’t clean, they know. Yet... people want security and well-being, and if politics in Italy is a joke, now there’s his hero. It was like that in ancient Rome with Octavian; we haven’t discovered anything new... People made their choice when they had to decide between an investigated businessman and a party lacking credibility; TV had little to do with it, in my opinion. People prefer decrees imposed from above quickly, once and for all, rather than a parliament that never decides, the republic no longer inspires trust in anyone; I sense a lot of distrust and an alarming sense of institutional failure: people, even if no one will ever admit it, now want the strong man, and they are willing to sacrifice some of their own freedom to have pseudo-guarantees that everything will be alright, if someone can convince them, maybe someone who knows how to speak well and always has a quick retort... people know, but they have chosen... We’ll see how it goes...
