The problem between early Autechre and those post "Confield" may also be rooted at an "emotional" level for long-time followers. Personally, it remains the impression that, while before they were defining operational parameters, lately they sound almost "derivative"... people like Vainio (Pan Sonic), Nicolai (Noto), or Ikeda, despite having more than one debt to "B&B," had already successfully experimented with certain solutions!

@ Zion: "compulsive" to "Tri Repetae" in the sense that the rhythmic geometry is less angular, making quite sensitive use of break beats and accelerations and decelerations that are almost "fractal," even though the tracks as a whole maintain that typical emotional suspension of Autechre.

@Franci: well, try something from the Ambient Temple of Imagination, even if they're a bit old, they don't sound too dated... then it depends on what you mean by "world" ("Planetary House Nation" could be very world given the title, less so in terms of effects;).

Aaaah, the introduction hits the mark regarding a reflection I've recently had about clubbing, a bit nostalgic indeed: at the end of the '90s (my golden age... but not only mine, of these times) the contamination of styles and genres was common and consolidated... now I too sense a resurgence, and I really hope that the dark times are fading away when if you went to a concert of the Okkervil River and it came out that you also listened to, say, Pan Sonic or Sunn O))), you would end up looking like Prince Myskin ("The Idiot").

Uhm, I instead find it almost a transitional album: as for the sounds, it starts from where they left off at the time of "Incunabola" and begins to hint at the compulsions of "Tri Repetae"... nothing wrong with that, of course, we are still talking about an "Autechreian" trademark through and through, but the compactness that characterizes all their (first...5?!) releases is somewhat lacking. Rightly so, it is more evocative than "conceptual," but it remains a great listen.

Oh, Ale, if you haven't seen it yet, take a look at "Canicola" (Hundstage) by Ulrich Seidl... still Austrian, but aesthetically different from Haneke... I think you might like it anyway (he clears the table more on a derivative level, while still being very raw!).

Patrick Chéreau "executed" (him and no one else) in that way in the early days makes a lot of sense... just like the dichotomous resurgence of the two kids, the only ones who are differently "self-redefinable"... Haneke, sure, is for few, but it's too much for good people (therefore bad)!!!

Thank you for the (critical) piece of "art"... but I'm joking or being ironic, indeed; nonetheless, the implied question was serious... and, ex abrupto, I would like to know what the real parameters of such experimentation are, because you mention at most Dylan (who during his most experimental period was cleverly "revivalist") and the Beatles (who certainly experimented a lot, but precisely at "ground zero," thus widely defining the parameters of the "popularity" to come)...
