Chick Corea & Gary Burton Live @ Wiener Konzerthaus, 2 aprile 2008, Vienna

It’s definitely worth seeing Cicoria live at least once in a lifetime... Gary Burton, on the other hand, is a very talented musician, but I’m not particularly a fan! "He created rhythms by snapping his fingers, clapping his hands, caressing the strings of his long grand piano, distorting the sounds he produced with the other hand, creating vibrant and dark acoustics. Things never seen before.ā€ Here you seem a bit naive; these are things that have been done for decades, even including objects, sheets of cardboard, necklaces, wooden and glass sticks inside the piano, on top of the strings, to create particular sounds and rhythms. Our Antonello Salis (but also Rita Marcotulli) for example has always made extensive use of these possibilities, even bringing a set of pots that he strikes with a stick, while with his left hand he plays the "modified" piano and with his foot he beats hard on the floor... and in the meantime he’s whistling too!!! Estimated rating: 4. P.S.: Do you know where you should put the signed CDs? ;-)

"Prodi participated in satanic Nazi orgies that the Illuminati hold in remote castles in the woods, even Kubrick knew it, I'm not making anything up... Veltroni also participates in orgies, and Mario Draghi is a sadomasochistic satanist." Rikardo, what is the source? I would be a bit skeptical about Prodi participating in orgies; I don't think he can get it up even with Viagra! And satanic and Nazi?

So the song really exists, it's not a joke... every time I think we've hit rock bottom, but then...

And there's no point in reading and rereading it if you haven't had that "experience" of reading elsewhere first; it'll always disgust you! Lux, I strongly advise you to set that record aside and listen to less extreme jazz records without prejudice (if you want recommendations, just ask and you'll receive) and maybe you'll fall in love with this music (which is NOT "cultured" and snobbish) and you can try again in the future! Then be careful to distinguish value judgments about a record from the emotions that tie you to it and your tastes. Personal example: I don't love B.B., I don't consider it a great record, I don't listen to it willingly, but I find it brilliant, shocking, revolutionary, UNIQUE and historically very important. In short, artistic value rating: 5, "aesthetic" (personal and subjective) rating: 3. One can also appreciate a record very much and consider it musically valid even if one doesn't like it! Broaden the range of your evaluation parameters...

One of those dust-ups that I love so much!! Ajeje, do you remember our first exchange of ideas, many months ago, (I can’t exactly recall if it was my first review or one of the first)? I came out saying that it wasn’t the right approach to start getting into jazz with Bitches Brew or Coltrane’s Ascension, and you disagreed; do you still think the same way? In my opinion, Lux's reaction is typical of someone who, lacking sufficient familiarity with a certain language, feels baffled and "offended"! It's like starting to know literature by reading Virginia Woolf as the first thing... you would say: but she doesn’t know how to write! What the hell does this sentence mean? It makes no sense, etc. The problem is rather that one still doesn't know how to read!

For me, it's not among the 5 most BEAUTIFUL of Miles, but among the 5 most IMPORTANT. It's a milestone, but not a grand musical masterpiece...and it's NOT proper jazz, so it would be a mistake to dismiss jazz just because you didn't like Bitches Brew. I was saying you were off track, especially regarding the alleged self-indulgence of jazz musicians, who, on the contrary, are among the most humble and skilled. Those who are self-indulgent are others, often in fusion, progressive, and the virtuosic metal guitarists who lack ideas! In true jazz, it's almost all the real deal; the smoke was only in the clubs ;-)

Lux, you’re off track! And anyway, Bitches Brew has very little to do with jazz as it is traditionally understood... I mean, it is absolutely not representative either of the sound or of the ā€œgenre.ā€

Sorry I can't add a comment that isn't simply: well done, great review!! ;-)
