Antonio, do you believe in the existence of "higher powers"? I presume Pastorius was one of them, a demigod... have I perhaps blasphemed by expressing and justifying my point of view? You’ve unexpectedly taken an extremist tone in your recent posts, so I think I’ll stop here to avoid disturbing your faith in the totem Jaco, but I want to point out that Monk's behaviors had nothing to do with arrogance, and that his music was not negatively influenced by it. I greet you with a bit of astonishment.

Not the peak of Jefferson for me, I agree with Supersoul (Surrealistic Pillow).

In Black Market, Jaco plays only on tracks number 2 (Cannonball) and number 6 (Barbary Coast), as stated in the original 2002 CD booklet, as well as by ear (I can tell it's not Pastorius, and I have no reason to doubt that they made a mistake in the writing, especially since it’s a recent remastering, with potential corrections). The liner notes then dispel any remaining doubt by rightly celebrating the best bass performance of the entire album: "The title song...In some respects it is a tour de force for bassist Johnson whose backing is nothing less than superb." Antonio, no one wants to downplay Pastorius, but it’s undeniable that he wanted to "astound"... didn’t he introduce himself to Zawinul as "Jaco Francis Pastorius III, the best bassist in the world"? Never mind whether it was true or not (and it probably was), the fact is that he had the issue on his mind, he wanted to prove it at all costs! And adding a bit of virtuosity now and then served the purpose. He certainly lacked humility, unlike Coltrane, just to return to the previous example. Coltrane was also aware of being the greatest saxophonist in the world, but he only cared about the music, and he played accordingly.

Well, by now I can't excuse myself, given that on my "to-review" list from Morgan was this one (that you stole from me) and Search... anyone who dares to touch this one will get a 1!! But I think it will take me about a month, since I'm under exams ;-)

For me, Jaco's greatest pieces remain "Continuum" and "Portrait Of Tracy," but Teen Town and Donna Lee are absolutely mind-blowing. I was mainly referring to his live dimension from the late '70s to the early '80s. Black Market is another ecstasy, but there Alphonso Johnson is playing anyway!!

Yes, basically our views coincide. Although, before you mentioned it, I had also thought of using Coltrane as an example, trying to demonstrate, however, that while for John those avalanches of notes were "inevitable" and irreplaceable, for Jaco it wasn't always the case. Coltrane never thought of "astonishing" others. He just did it! Like Parker and all the other geniuses, even more genius than Jaco.
