Brad Mehldau Largo

What can I say... I've seen it three times myself, there was lyricism, there was "composure," but when the pieces opened up, it blew my mind. By "captivating," I mean that the continuous polyrhythmic and melodic figures were genius and sublime, moving to the point of tears. I mean to say that there was a creative concentration, a tension that sliced through the air. You watch him play up close (if you're in the back, you miss 70% of the group's interplay), and his pained expression makes you understand that his musical thoughts are screaming even though he’s still choosing the notes to play at that moment. Whether in a trio or solo. But then with those two behind him, bass and drums... some pieces are at two hundred miles an hour! (Both Rossy and Ballard are excellent in their diversity; they've managed to bring out an interesting side of him. I still consider Rossy "the drummer of Mehldau"). Maybe you should check out his records, especially those live at the Vanguard (Art of The Trio Vol. 2 & 4), because it really seems like you're talking about a different pianist. Muffin, what do you think?

After almost two years, I’m back...incredible...It's 5!! Jack is in stellar form, you were right. Same level as the live at the Blue Note (like saying Olympus).

No, so, excuse me. How can you say that it's conventional? By now, EVERYONE, both professional and amateur pianists, copies, in this order: his unreachable tone; his ABSTRACT way of deconstructing pieces (which now form a rather innovative repertoire for jazz); his lines (right and left, single and counterpointed simultaneously) intricately rhythmic and melodic; his compositions, occasionally sublime...

Supersoul, in the meantime, it's all to be proven (good luck!) that the pianism of this great artist hasn't brought any innovation, and then I don't see how you can seriously say that he should limit himself to playing ballads. His live records (and his concerts!) are among the most thrilling and engaging works of recent years... virtuosity at all levels (the most important: improvisational virtuosity, that is: ideas galore).

One of the two or three Mehldau albums I don't know (he's my favorite pianist of the last fifteen years). I wasn't drawn to the orchestration... not to mention the dual drums (I'm a drummer). I saw a brief solo concert of his on July 5 at the auditorium in Rome, and his repertoire is becoming increasingly eclectic: bridges of Paranoid Android, Get Happy (!!), Massive Attack, Hy Fly (!!), Beatles, a piece of his and Nick Drake. The exclamation marks indicate my astonishment at the unusual choices. Brad playing Get Happy would never come to anyone's mind ;-) He peaked in 2006 with a wicked half-hour version of My Favorite Things... which will sadly never appear on record!

I only know Bobby's Spontaneous Inventions from '85, really good. I recommend it to everyone. Passionate review but a bit too "hey!" for my taste...

Svensson was a very talented figure, it's a shame about the loss. I only have the trio's album where they play Monk's pieces, which is a really beautiful record. Good review and welcome to debaser!

Another immense power of the dwarf and of what has become today's "politics": creating hatred among people. A climate of "terror" will be created (it has already been created) where speaking about politics calmly and civilly, exposing oneself without personal harm will be impossible. I work with private clients, and I know that I would be professionally discriminated against by some "faithful" if they knew I didn't idolize the one they idolize (or simply vote for, or support...to benefit themselves or hope to benefit themselves). There is no longer tolerance, no "sportsmanship" in the difference of opinions; you become the ENEMY to be destroyed if you think differently, because you will be someone who, by voting contrary to them, will make it more difficult for them to obtain: (if they are powerful and influential) that "permit," that "amnesty," that "extension," those "favours" they need to make more money or pay less and become even more powerful, pissing on others in a desperate attempt to compensate for my frustration at not being a true alpha male. Or (if they are someone ordinary), you will make it harder for their "dream" to come true: paying fewer taxes, having more pension, more efficient services, greater purchasing power, safer cities, and other nonsense. Being right-wing or left-wing has become an act of faith because there are no real elements to judge. And so it’s like the wars of religious fanatics, ready to kill for the "cause." But every cause is a lie of power to favor controlled slavery. And by now, everything is based almost exclusively on a shameful patronage system. It’s a conspiracy among a few at the expense of many; it’s legalized mafia. Only now there’s no need for the thug with the gun; the mafia currently self-defends by creating hatred among the victims of this system, both aware and unaware, who are the "right-wing" and "left-wing" masses, who believe that by voting they support an IDEAL! And they continue undisturbed.
