John Coltrane A Love Supreme
Voto:
What were those friends of yours, lawyers? Joking aside, those who love music love it all as long as it has value!
Marc Johnson Bass Desires
Voto:
Nice album, tight and "technical" just right, but without compromising musicality and with decent compositions! Good proposal and good review.
Sonny Clark Cool Struttin'
Voto:
Good reception and good album, but for me it's a 3.5! I prefer Clark in a trio.
Art Pepper Friday Night At The Village Vanguard
Voto:
I don’t know this particular album, but great reviews!! And great Art, and great Max :-)
I'm actually reading the book in question these days...
You're right, "Meets The Rhythm Section" is truly a superb masterpiece, just as the "manifesto" of bebop is undoubtedly "A Night In Tunisia" (even though Ko-Ko contains a brilliant solo by Parker—but manifesto means something else). Amen brother.
Horace Silver Blowin' the Blues Away
Voto:
One of Silver's best. I must say, however, that I don't fully share the strong enthusiasm for Cook and Mitchell!
Ornette Coleman This Is Our Music
Voto:
If you read on AllMusic, it lists other dates...between the two sources, I think Cook and Morton are more reliable.
Ornette Coleman This Is Our Music

When it comes to personal tastes (except in indefensible cases), there’s not much to discuss... but I just don’t get this passage: "today it kicks ass, I’m in the right psycho-physical conditions, I’ll try again, today I like it and it doesn’t hit me, almost always worse." In short, you like it more than usual (it even kicks ass) but it "hits" you less? Change of the Century was entirely recorded in October '59, Shape was partially recorded in October '59 and partially in July '60, Our Music was entirely recorded in July '60, having a recording session in common with Shape. At least that’s what Richard Cook and Brian Morton say, who are usually very precise... I’ve never doubted it, especially because listening to Shape and Our Music one after the other seems to reveal the same sound unity as, I don’t know, Cookin’ and Relaxin’ by Miles Davis, recorded on the same day... but it doesn’t matter anyway!
Jackie McLean Right Now!
Voto:
Great album, but not a masterpiece for me. Nevertheless, it's worth knowing, like Let Freedom Ring, Destination Out, and Action! Important records in Blue Note modernism, straddling dreamlike lyricism, modalities, hard bop, Orientalisms, and free jazz. McLean is a saint right away, if only for having "discovered" the genius of Tony Williams!
Paolo Fresu Songlines / Night & Blue

I'm very happy to hear that, dear Odra! Happy reading :-D
And thank goodness Halloween is over: it means I won't be interrupted by the doorbell while listening to Shostakovich!!
Ludwig van Beethoven Sonate per Pianoforte WoO47
Voto:
Really excellent reviews on youthful works that deserve more than one listen precisely because of what they hint at. I recommend the box set "Beethoven Complete Masterpieces" from Sony-RCA to everyone, which also includes many "minor" works.
