Kenny Garrett Beyond The Wall

Oh dear, maybe I said something wrong! Muff, listening to a saxophone student from my music school, it seemed to me that I understood it was a very complex technique, reserved for the most talented... he explained what it was about and indeed, thinking about having to do something like that made my stomach turn! But maybe he didn't understand a damn thing, or I did ;-) However, I notice that many saxophonists, both old and contemporary, perhaps don't extensively utilize this technique, as they’re constantly taking breaths! So I thought that for some it might be a technical limitation, which in my mind confirmed my friend's words; anyway, I will look into it further, you've made me doubt... at this point, I can't help but think that maybe Ajeje’s question was a trick one ;-)

By the way, let no one mistake him for the poor fool Kenny G (the chic curly-haired guy)! Cynic, in fact, in that album Metheny does quite well, but in my opinion, Garrett's improvisations are on another level of complexity (which may not necessarily appeal to everyone!). And then with Garrett, there’s the whole circular breathing thing, a marvel of technique that allows one to inhale through the nose while exhaling through the mouth, which enables a considerable extension of certain note emissions or to phrase without pausing to breathe. VERY FEW can do it. Sonny Rollins holds him in high regard, considering him the best among the "young" saxophonists alongside James Carter and David Ware.

Well, now you're bringing up Kenny Garrett... Man, you're great, let me tell you that! So young and already such a seasoned connoisseur... You’re winning my affection and respect more and more ;-) I know his beautiful Trilogy and Pursuance, and I've heard great things about Standard of Language. I haven’t heard that one yet, but I have no doubt about its value, especially since the "guests" are definitely not newcomers (only Mulgrew Miller doesn't blow me away). Brian Blade is phenomenal; I've seen him live so many times; he dances when he plays, but he dances all out of sync, and offbeat with his syncopated rhythms, which are on the upbeat 70% of the time!! Kudos also for your appreciation of the amazing Shorter quartet (Patitucci has the most powerful and clean sound on the double bass that I've ever heard). Until next time, keep it up!

Good review for an important historic group, made up of excellent musicians (among whom I particularly appreciate Franco D'Andrea). I’m not familiar with the album in question, although I imagine it will be very good.

In times of lean cows, one makes do with fat cows. It has a triple meaning. Don't worry if you don't understand it. Basketgirl Nobel Prize right away.

Here you go! I know all the musicians you mentioned very well, except, oh dear, just Fiorentino, whom I only know by name! I take your word for the quality, and besides... if there's Footprints!! P.S.: How does Colaiuta behave?
Edward Vesala - Sound And Fury Lumi

Here I am back from the Carnival of Venice! Heartfelt thanks to the joyful crowd. Jake, I often share your same (well-founded) mistrust, but here rest assured, because Vesala is first and foremost a great composer, and only secondarily a drummer (of great class nonetheless, not at the level of Weckl!). Thanks again to everyone. P.S.: I'm afraid we've missed Odradek's presence on the site, and it's an important loss. Let's all commit to reviving Debaser with quality contributions, or the level will continue to decline and other key figures will leave, leading to a final downfall! Kind of like you Muffin and Ole, who have a wealth of things to say and propose; time permitting, show yourselves on the home page!!

By the way, you should know that I listened to the double album reviewed on the train in mp3. I'm voting for the first impression.

IT'S NOT TRUE!! I JUST GOT BACK FROM THE CARNIVAL OF VENICE... LEFT ON FRIDAY EVENING AND JUST CAME BACK, CHECK THE POSTS! I met the elusive Happypippo, who, HEAR HEAR, is a very sweet person, super funny, and also a really good drummer who plays quite a bit in Venice! Everything he talked about was true, while some were making fun of him. And his vinyl collection is AMAZING.

Better yellowish Bjorkina than brownish-indigestion like the Tiber!!
