Uhellallà, this time we hit the jackpot, Jake! I’ve never seen a trilogy of jazz reviews all in a row on the homepage. You, me, and Dolphy, then... no kidding!! ;-) I knew about the album, but I didn’t get it because I’m not crazy about De Vito, even though she’s good. To be honest, I don’t quite share your opinion on the great quality and the excellent regard in which our jazz is held abroad; it seems to me that we are often (and rightly so) considered the poor relatives. There aren’t really any standout figures, the names are always the same and they kind of recycle the same old stuff, there’s a lack of artistic direction, a path, a DEVELOPMENT, and a charismatic leader is missing, not to mention geniuses... apart from perhaps Trovesi! We had Massimo Urbani... now we have Petrella and similar artists. In the concerts and disc releases of our artists, there are ONLY (or almost) Gatto, Rava, Fresu, Doctor 3, Giammarco... then there’s Bollani, okay, but in France, for example, there’s Martial Solal (and there was Petrucciani!). Essentially, Italian jazz musicians are more instrumentalists than complete musicians; they mostly stick to rehashing (and not even at the state of the art) the old styles, adding a touch of singability and a sense of reverential awe. I’m not an aficionado of foreign music, it’s just that there’s no denying it, the world capital of jazz is New York, the excitement is there, and the truly badass and innovative instrumentalists are there. Another "hot" area is Northern Europe.

mmmhm...what happened to those few others? What a shame this masterpiece is being snubbed like this! Jake, I came back here to reread the review and only now I see that you don't know the album. Have you caught up in the meantime? It might be one of the most important listens you could have...

The young promise is back at work!! Happy to be the first to comment. I miss the album; to be honest, I don’t have many Tyner solo albums, just "The Real McCoy," "Sahara," and "Supertrios," which I'll review sooner or later. This solo piano one intrigues me, especially because of the repertoire; I’ll definitely look for it! Meanwhile, in May I’m going to see him play in a trio at the auditorium in Rome. Who wants to come?

Watch out, because Heavy Weather is half a masterpiece and half commercial, but... I still like it!
