Yeah, damn, you explained yourself but I don't agree :D I believe that music can be beautiful and can communicate something even without anger and frustration; it's just a different type of music from what you like, "music for the mind" if you will (although I don't fully believe that). And anyway, I don't think that those who make "intellectual" music (like, I don't know, King Crimson) are frustrated ;)

Yes, maryg, I agree with you on that, but "it's a feeling" isn't the best definition;) I would say that "grunge" is an attitude (especially social), it's an attitude of angry but powerless rebellion (and ultimately self-serving) against society and the world as a whole. And this, more than the music, is the element that unites "grunge" bands.

Well, I don’t argue about your tastes; if you find prog awful, that’s completely your prerogative! It’s just that it’s not the first time (and I’ve been here for a short time) that as soon as prog is mentioned, you immediately jump in saying it’s all crap and that it should disappear from the face of the earth, which is a bit annoying, if you don’t mind me saying. You might not realize it, but your attitude is as dogmatic as that of the "fideists" of prog, as you call them :D All this without any hard feelings, okay? ;)

"Fanno grunge" doesn't mean much, in fact. And anyway, Mudhoney has practically nothing of metal, while they have a lot of punk (in my opinion). I repeat, if Arm and Turner hear you say they have a metal attitude, they would at least skin you alive :D

Just think that first Turner and then Arm left Green River precisely because they considered Ament and Gossard "too metal"!! Are you sure you didn’t mix up the album?? Oh, the first Soundgarden album is from '88 (the year before an EP was released) but the band had already been around for several years.
