Here we could go on quoting all night! @azzo, I share your opinion on the lyrics of Dirt, though I wouldn't forget the dialogue with God in "God Am" (This God of mine relaxes, World dies I still pay taxes!), or "Frogs" (What does friend mean to you? A word so wrongfully abused). The lyrics of Dirt are more raw and direct (realistic is putting it mildly), but for me, true compositional maturity was achieved in the self-titled album. Subtleties. @donjunio, I would add "I Wish I could eat your cancer when you turn black" to those images. Not bad for a declaration of love :-)

Let's say that in the beginning most of the lyrics were written by Cantrell, then Staley made his mark and in the end more than half of the lyrics of Alice came from his pen. In any case, even Cantrell's lyrics are far from being dismissed ("Down in a Hole").
