"Five years have passed since the last studio work of the American band" it's been, what, 2 months since the last review of this album.
Frank Zappa, Tony Palmer 200 Motels
Voto:
Certainly, it won't go down in the annals of cinema history, but it's a quirky piece that at times is genius... the story told draws inspiration from the tour era when Zappa and the Mothers were constantly on the road, staying in about 200 hotels in just over a year... Unfortunately, the music isn’t at Zappian levels, but it’s still of good quality... Of course, the reviewer has only seen this among Zappa's "films" because this is perhaps the only one with a filmic development, given that "Uncle Meat," which is definitely weirder and more disjointed, was completed 20 years later and is more of a backstage feature... The only other film/concert that made it to theaters is "Baby Snake" from '78, a true gem for both music and creativity... although it remains a concert with backstage elements and some videos of the great Bickford (runtime of 3 hours)... The other "film" that never made it to theaters is "Amazing Mr. Bickford," an entire animated story made with plasticine by the brilliant artist, scored by Zappa (with the London Symphony conducted by Nagano). Then there are two more film/concerts...

Bart, in fact I didn't say it was one of his masterpieces, but for me it's an enjoyable film with nice surprises, and it could engage a more "Americanized" audience more. That it is inferior to others is undeniable; already Zatoichi is too particular...

a standard is neither an "easy" nor a "difficult" theme; 'round midnight has become a standard, just like many pieces by Ellington or Davis (Miles). the standard can come from any musical "background"... regarding "inventati," you are right, it's not a particularly nice word, but while writing quickly, it was the first one that came to mind and it conveyed the idea.
