Death The Sound of Perseverance
Voto:
I don't know. I'm puzzled. Lately, I've been revisiting the entire discography of Death (it's been a long time since I "seriously" listened to one of their albums) and... The much-acclaimed "The Sound Of Perseverance" just doesn't convince me that much anymore. Yet I remember loving it a few years back just like everyone else does (I don't think I've ever read a negative or even moderate review). Now, however, I find it "nice," absolutely not bad (of course!), but too fragmented, progressive in the wrong way. Technical for sure, played with passion and undoubtedly inventive, but the ideas seem randomly glued together, and it all sounds (to me) scattered and broken up; I don't want to exaggerate, but if we took any passage from one song and replaced it with a passage from another, it wouldn't make much of a difference. When I put it back on a few weeks ago, I could hardly believe it, and the impression hasn't disappeared with repeated listens. Is it possible that I've come to dislike it that much? Maybe I listened to it at the "wrong" moment? ... Anyway, there are some killer tracks, "Scavenger.." is a classic (and coincidentally, it's the most cohesive song), "Bite The Pain," "Story To Tell" are excellent... I'm less convinced by the others, particularly "To Forgive Is To Suffer" and "Moment Of Clarity." Well, maybe in a year I'll come back here to contradict myself again like an idiot, who knows. :)
