ghemison...hardcore is much more a movement than a genre (I'm referring to old-school) and anyone who truly knows (I mean follows several bands from the same period...not just a quick listen and move on) the topic understands that it’s all about movement. In any case, I wouldn’t venture into evaluating something I don’t know well. I don’t know much about electronic music and don’t have that much desire to learn, so I won’t judge, but I was talking about indie and alternative, which are things I know quite well. I find labels useless. I appreciate much more the macro-genres that don’t describe, but indicate. In short, alternative, indie, emo(?), hardcore, post-hardcore, post-rock(?), to me they’re all just called punk rock.

The Meat Puppets of this EP and the first LP leave me puzzled: I can't figure out whether I like them a lot or if they completely suck. The solution, coming soon to your pixels.

And should we forget grunge??? Millions of bands thrown into the mix just because they experienced a certain historical period!

If I tell you I don’t know, would you believe me? I read it the other day in a review. When I say indie, I don’t mean The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, and similar crap. I mean Pavement, Dinosaur Jr., Pixies, etc. Unfortunately, labels exist to sell. You walk into a record store and buy a CD at random without knowing the genre, and what, like that??? I really don’t think so. Today, saying you play indie or alternative sounds cool (let’s not even talk about saying post-rock… there you become a god), but if you actually play alternative or indie, you can be sure that no one will pay attention to you. That’s for sure. Why are Arctic Monkeys or The Strokes labeled as indie??? Because there’s ignorance out there, and I’m convinced that anyone who has ever listened to indie records wouldn’t dream of calling those bands that… and then people say indie because you should see how many fake alternative youngsters walk the earth, especially stomping on British soil, where the real money for music circulates.

<<Labels should be taken for what they are>>. Absolutely true, but there are substantial differences. Indie and alternative have a very vague style, emo does not. Emo is a ridiculous bunch of nonsense because it relies on lyrics that become emotional, talking about feelings, unlike, according to some, old-school hardcore bands. Huge nonsense... clearly, no one has ever listened to the Descendents or Hüsker Dü... what do the lyrics of Zen Arcade talk about??? Nonsense, perhaps??? Labels are created for the mere delight of the critic who invents them, the musician who feels almost avant-garde, and the loser who brags to friends about listening to emo, post-rock, ebh... nonsense. Nothing else. Emo, just like post-rock, doesn't exist and isn't much different from what came before someone created this new category. Obviously, the emo discourse applies to so-called old-school bands. Today’s bands that thrive on MTV don’t even exist for me.
