Floating not in space, but in your mind. Thirty-nine minutes that swiftly drift away among the thoughts that Oneida spurs on. A journey without ever departing, without ever leaving your bed. If I could truly do something, I would make a film of this music.
A single character, zero dialogues. I would have them walk down one of those American boulevards with two-story houses on both sides. Shot from behind, walking slowly as the sun rises. Fourteen minutes of just walking, music, and steady footsteps in this tunnel of monotony. No other characters, no other forms of life.
Suddenly lying on the ground, capturing the rain-laden clouds and then a close-up, a very tight close-up. Only eyes, eyelashes, nose, and tears... like this for minutes and minutes, with nothing happening. The image slowly widens from the moment the voice starts. Slowly the mouth appears, then the neck, then the whole body, and he still lies immobile on the ground staring at the clouds... another twelve minutes have passed, all steady.
We jump across the ocean, time blurs: the last movement is the silent Berlin at five in the morning. A frontal fixed camera on the only character in this world. No expression, no breath. Change of shot: fixed camera from behind at an angle. His profile appears and Berlin floats past the window of the empty S-Bahn. From Hackescher Markt to Bellevue, then to the Zoologischer Garten. A droplet made of synth digs into memory as the spring reverb of the amplifier is detonated. The fixed camera returns to the character. A fixed gaze out the window and a face worn from a night of struggle. The droplet has turned into a vortex, but it returns. It rises and falls in tone as the tortures of the amplifier continue. BOOM, suddenly the music fades, the dynamics lower. Just nine seconds... eight... seven... A zoom-in shot is fired into the character's face like a gunshot. We end in his pupil, into total black. Deafening warmth in total black... final seconds of music and STOP. Silence and black. Silence. Silence and end credits:
ONEIDA - "PRETEEN WEAPONRY" (2008) ...a single song in three acts. A guitar, a drum, and a synth that will set your synapses on fire. Have a good journey.
