Well... I'm not an expert, but in Uccellacci e Uccellini, the journey is at the heart of the story. Thanks to the journey, the proletarian Totò encounters the underclass and the bourgeoisie, encounters the crow, encounters those who deceive him... in short... at the center of the story is this journey through the misery and desolation of provincial roads. This is how I understood it, but I could be wrong.
