I never liked them; they always seemed to me like a poorly done clone of Jethro, and then there's that unpleasant Fossati. Great review, but I'll make sure not to get this album.

By the way, Ricky, what do you think of Le Orme?

"...I remind you that I have always explained what I think on every occasion...", it has never happened even once. Legendary that time you dismissed Sgt. Pepper's with "the album in my opinion is terrible_rating:1."

Cptgaio, let it go, it’s not his fault that he is this way, it’s the trends that create certain characters. Don’t worry, in some time, the tables will turn, and he will change his way of thinking: Queen and The Beatles will again be regarded as remarkable bands, just like Genesis and many others who are currently being ridiculously belittled by certain individuals.

A manifesto film of many childhoods, a solid 4. The review is in classic Stipe style: thrown together in 5 minutes.

"Selling England..." whether you like it or not, is an absolute masterpiece, and you can find it among the top pop music records of the 20th century.

For me, the masterpiece is Alchemy, and I would give it an 8.5; the other one is a good album. However, I far prefer the early Genesis to both of them. It's all a matter of perspective...

The Jethro Tull released Aqualung and Thick as a Brick in succession, the Genesis with Foxtrot and Selling England. What makes me prefer Genesis to the Third Ear Band is the great camaraderie they had achieved as musicians, each with their own distinctive style (recognizable from the very first seconds): by blending all these styles, an incredibly successful musical symbiosis was created, forming the Genesis trademark. The Third Ear Band, sure, made great collective improvisations, but I don't see that personal style of the individual that, together with the style of the other members, forms the group's trademark (the trademark discussion applies to other bands too: Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Yes, but also Le Orme and many others). And if I'm to be honest, I prefer "Alchemy" to "Third Ear Band," it has that indescribable quality that only early works can offer.

Absolutely true, but I think the Pink Floyd dwell in their own realm, in the Floydian kingdom, where there was neither progressive, nor rock, nor classical... Speaking of the improvisation in "Nine Feet Underground,ā€ you get a taste of it at 14:12 minutes, and scattered here and there, it's full of instrumental nooks with improvised solos of that kind (I’m not saying I hate them). In progressive music, everything is more rigid; the Hammond solo in Close to the Edge, for example, is more clearly defined—there it is, and it will remain that way forever—just like the apocalypse one in 9/8. I'm off to bed; I’ll read the replies, the insults, the lawsuits, and whatever else tomorrow during lunch break. An' za vet.
