that friend of mine hasn't even studied classical piano; he's a fan like you of Rudess and Sheridian and he's started studying their pieces with his piano teacher. He learned them in no time. In my opinion, in three years one can be capable of playing like these guys, like Malmsteen on guitar or Portnoy on drums; the difference is that, while playing or emulating these is quite easy, composing like Blackmore, Wakeman or playing like Pastorius is an innate gift.
