Yes, but then they decided to turn elsewhere: a very respectable choice if they hadn't accompanied it with phrases like "we've never been metal, we played metal only to destroy it from within." The '90s, on one hand, saw the decline of many "historical" bands of the genre, but on the other hand, they were useful because they revealed a lot about the "moral" stature of those very bands (but I repeat, not for their stylistic choices, but for the attitude displayed). As far as I'm concerned, "Death Magnetic" could be a masterpiece (that it isn't, clearly, is another story), but it's too convenient to return to "hard sounds" now, after 20 years of spitting in the plate you ate from.

I don't know, among the first 4, I might say something heretical, but it's the one I like the least (great album anyway, just to be clear), and I much prefer the more mature "And Justice for All". My rating would be a 4, but lately, they’re getting on my nerves too much, so I’ll drop it by 1.
