and finally: "Your Words Hurt. It could have been arranged by Ennio Morricone" (quote from Pessotto). Claudio, have you ever listened to Cosmozen by Neoismo? (available for download from their website from the album atmosfera nel cubo...and I swear I don't play with them). Those who have listened to it thought that it was arranged by Morricone himself. The lyrics and the voice of the singer (real name Emiliano Sera, a roughly 27-year-old guy, I believe) are comparable to the best of Battiato (and I'm not joking...the first time I heard it on the radio (rock di Roma) I was amazed!). Why is there so much talk about Maggese, so much talk about Cremonini, and there is no trace of a WONDERFUL song? These, in my opinion (and this is the line I've held all along) are the questions we should be asking ourselves? :)

Second comment: guys, read the lyrics of Cremonini...I don’t know, for example, Sardegna! But are we really convinced that we’re at the levels of De Gregori, Guccini, De Andrè, Fossati, Lalli (just to name a few singer-songwriters)? I reiterate that this is not a crusade against Cremonini, but some statements are, in my opinion obviously, a bit daring. Good Claudio seems, in some cases, like a tightrope walker. I agree that we shouldn’t demonize the album, but to call it a masterpiece seems exaggerated. The same lyrics of Baggio and Senna that are often cited...well, guys, read it carefully...it’s not very poetic, indeed I would say it’s a bit trivial (just my opinion). I repeat, let’s not transform enjoyable albums (seasonal and not groundbreaking) into albums that leave a mark. Lastly, put the lyrics of Sister Sconfitta by Massimo Zamboni next to Senna and Baggio (since it talks about solitude and defeat) where the goliardic vibe of Cremonini clashes with Zamboni’s intimacy...well, there’s a difference. Everyone is free to feel what their heart dictates, but be careful not to turn what shines into gold. With affection, Logic :)

So... let's take it easy. 1) Italian music in hibernation? Absolutely not, guys! There is more activity today than ever before. A lot of high-quality underground stuff. Italians are proposing, record labels are arranging. 2) The radio. Radios play what record labels pay for! In other words, they broadcast tracks on rotation that the record labels shell out for (and promote: the law of supply and demand).... in other words, Dj Francesco, Paola and Chiara, Cremonini, and so on (I also think about Live 8... how come the faces on stage are the same ones that are playing on the radio? Aren't human struggles a concern for everyone?). 3) Where radio cannot reach, the network, the ether, word of mouth, and sites where there is an exchange of ideas and opinions come into play. If it weren't for this, today many self-produced records wouldn't even see the light of day. To support this idea, let me give you an example that might not be entirely related but fits: How many of you are convinced that the war in Iraq was waged for weapons of mass destruction (official version) rather than for oil (alternative information)? Guys, the means are there. You just need to keep a musical curiosity... and seek according to your own way of feeling the emotions transposed into music.

I find all your reasoning not only extremely sensible but irredeemably correct (including the "look a bit" syndrome! I think it’s a brilliant term to coin). Furthermore, my intention has never been a crusade against Cremonini; I gain nothing from it, nor does it fulfill me to speak negatively about him. I repeat, this is not musical sophistry; it is mostly an alternative proposal... a possible different path. :)

I'm just not convinced. Your review is very interesting (obviously there's a different spirit of approach to the album... with less enthusiasm and more critical sense). But I'm not convinced. To get a better idea of the album, I went to read the lyrics. They don’t seem that "evolved" to me. Let me explain. In Italy, there are people who write and convey emotions in a very deep way, with an ability to express in words and music feelings of solitude... and to make you reflect in your silences, far from the spotlight and commercial pressures. These frightened yet brave "seekers of intimacy" scream in silence, without videos, without commerce. They leave invisible traces to most (yet they are no less hardworking than our Cremonini). I think of the good Chimenti, forgotten by many and hidden from most. I think of Cesare Basile. I think of Anima. I think of Nosound. I think of Ginevra di Marco. I think of Lalli. I think of Nicola Alesini. And I’m sorry. I’m sorry to think of a world that doesn’t offer equal opportunities. I’m saddened to think of people stifled at birth by the music business... those who genuinely propose quality dictated by their own feelings. Those who, having never written pieces of "anchor and attachment," will inevitably fall, forgotten. I dedicate my "Taliban" (and why bring racism into it) and bitter thoughts to them. However, I am convinced that every age and era has its own sounds, and I don't criticize the way young people feel. Music is like the wind; it often changes direction. Maybe one day we will realize that behind the wind there are also solid walls that withstand time and weather. That’s all. :)

The beauty of Marillion (when they put in the effort!) is that they manage to camouflage technique and class within seemingly innocuous pieces. I'll give you an example: the drummer works a lot on the cymbals in a subdued manner even when the piece is apparently devoid of frantic rhythms (this way of playing hints at a touch on the instrument that is truly masterful. It doesn’t take much to really crank it up! It’s the dynamics and touch that make a musician appealing). Once again, compliments to Godh. :)

Come on, to each his own. The Bible says there's a time for everything; for you, it’s probably time for Cremonini. Tomorrow it will be someone else's turn. It’s no problem if you like Cremonini, if he gives you emotions, if he can make you dream and experience your youth as the soundtrack to your freshest season. I don’t believe Cremonini can be compared to the "old" Italian singer-songwriters (obviously, this is just my personal opinion). But Cremonini is not the representative of the new either... in fact, he is musically quite aligned with a certain line of "commerciality." In Italy, there are fresh bands venturing into difficult yet fascinating paths (and that’s why they remain in the shadows). I think of Giardini di Mirò, Anima, Neoismo, Nosound, and so on. I also realize that for many, these people do not exist. There is a time for everything, guys. Enjoy your Cremonini today (because it’s right for it to be so), tomorrow will see you flying towards new horizons, towards new sounds that will resonate with your feelings. :)
