The Triple Tree Ghosts

To begin with, I always recommend "in europa," a live album that includes many of the most significant tracks by sol invictus... it can provide a good overview; otherwise, if you're looking for a specific album, I can recommend "trees in winter," or even the latest one, "the devil steed," which is very nice... bye...
Depeche Mode Live @ Stadio Olimpico (Roma) 16.06.09

Great concert! I feared they would be a bit washed out, but they delivered big time... just like in the last tour, it took them a while to warm up, but they grew during the set and reached peak form during the iconic "Personal Jesus," after a solid two-hour show! The setlist was appreciable (the new songs are really not great, but it’s remarkable that out of the 22 tracks played, only 9 were from the last tour, proving there's a desire to vary and not just repeat the same songs forever... after all, "do' coi coi," in Depeche's discography, you always find the good stuff... and it’s truly brilliant to wrap it all up with a song like "Waiting for the Night"... only they could pull that off, for real...). One observation I want to make: Martin Gore's intimate interlude was something sensational. Despite thirty years of career and a truckload of cash earned, Martin still seems to believe in it, and I found him closer and more genuine than some well-known little divas of today, celebrated only because they're quirky or because they appeal to a select few (the right ones, evidently). The Depeche Mode are a clear demonstration that seeing pop and author music as strictly oppositional is a terrible folly... long live the DM, long live Gahan!!! I give it a 4 only because of the bland tracks from the last album, but the emotions evoked by "Enjoy the Silence," "Stripped," or "In Your Room" are really rare these days... among the greats of the '80s, they’re the best out there...

...anyway, the final 8 is not the mark...I had included the symbol of infinity, but it seems that during the editing process it was mistakenly straightened...

Antonius Rex Anno Demoni

The review is very good, also valid for illustrating the artist Bartoccetti; however, the album (if we can call it that) does not live up to the masterpieces branded Antonious Rex: decidedly uneven, lacking a concept that could serve as a glue among the various tracks, it feels like a collection of b-sides. Great moments (Gloriae Manus, Jacula the Witch, Missanigra - which anticipates certain dark-industrial suggestions) alternate with evident drops in inspiration (the bland title track, Souls Satan, even ridiculous - it sounds like Rino Gaetano in a satanic version - and the last track of which I don’t even remember the title). I have seen, however, that the latest "Per Viam" has just been released, where Bartoccetti returns to singing... who knows what Antonious Rex will come up with in 2009...

Vortex, you are right regarding the discussion on hammering, but the absence of rhythms, at least on this album, in Whitehouse is disarming, and I needed to emphasize the concept even at the cost of bending reality... TG and company are not hammerers (we're not talking about techno or black metal) but these guys (like many of their followers) are truly white noise in its purest form...

Hi Giubbo, actually I haven't listened to the latest one yet, I saw on the site that it's not a proper album, but rather something with 4 tracks and in collaboration with another group/artist... rest assured that as soon as I get my hands on it, you’ll see a new review on Debaser....

Beautiful work: the WITRT are undeniably the best black metal group of the third millennium. Two Hunters remains, for me, unsurpassed; I find it more monumental, better thought out and constructed (in terms of the structure of the pieces and the succession of settings) and better produced. However, the levels remain extremely high, even though there's a tinge of regret for what could have been if our group had just a bit more courage. On one hand, the WITRT manage a difficult task: they craft an inspired black metal album (I haven't heard such beautiful melodic lines since Nattens Madrigal by Ulver!); on the other hand, though, they fail at something very simple: they could have dared more. The spontaneous question arises: how come a group capable of constructing such complex and engaging plots settles for a conventional black metal? I repeat: the challenge was to maintain such high levels of inspiration, and they succeeded. They just needed a bit more cleverness to broaden their horizons, injecting a greater dose of post-rock, psychedelia, and folk (why did they remove the female vocals?). In any case: phenomenal.

The album that symbolizes apocalyptic folk is, in my opinion, "what happens when the symbols shatter?" by Death in June (also great is NADA!); otherwise, dive into Current 93: "thunder perfect mind" is a standout, but even the latest "black ships etc." is worth it. Lastly, "tres in winter" by Sol Invictus... it’s a very complex genre, and there are many things to listen to. If you have the patience, you can start from my early reviews on Debaser and see what might be closer to your tastes... bye.
