In blues, especially in Delta blues, the bottleneck is almost exclusively used on resonator guitars (the dobro resonator) or on Spanish guitars. You will rarely see the bottleneck used on a Fender Stratocaster, except in very rare exceptions, because the Stratocaster has a really limited action, and usually, those who play it with a slide need at least to have a floating bridge. However, it must be said that if someone can unleash the tremolos from their guitar, nothing is off-limits.

Clapton was God during the time of the album with Mayall, which is the cornerstone of British Blues and is why Stevie Ray Vaughan and Rory Gallagher play the way they do and amplify the way they do. Rory Gallagher's Taste (as well as the Jimi Hendrix Experience) was a hard-blues power trio that openly imitated - to put it mildly - Cream. That Clapton artistically died in 1970 is another story.
