Pure Love Anthems

Watch out, I didn’t say Carter is cocky, just that for a punk girl (and I know quite a few, unfortunately) he perfectly matches the idea of "cool" aka erotic dream. I haven’t listened to the whole album, just a few tracks to see if they were as atrocious as people said, and they turned out to be worse than my already underground expectations. Music that I can only see fitting as a soundtrack for Summerland or things like that. I remember Anthem, one of the worst structured and most cloying tracks I've ever heard. No, there’s just no way, they really suck :-).

I know people who consider Gallows total, I like them a little bit (especially the second one), but they don't seem that special to me. These Pure Love are atrocious, I don't understand where they avoid "predictable rock missteps," I believe that if the genre "predictable rock" existed, they would be its pioneers, harmless stadium tunes with the classic MTV sound... in short, Foo Fighters without talent. But then how can you say that Carter "doesn't fit the cool guy profile"? Aside from the fact that for punk girls he has been cool for quite some time, he’s exactly what an alternative girl dreams of, he looks like a magazine model: tall, skinny, tough-guy face, tattoos popping up everywhere, what else does he need?

I'm certainly not a fan of the genre (in fact, hardcore metal mostly makes me cringe), but I have a Brazilian friend who would have many objections about that "poor hardcore scene in South America" (even though Ratos are certainly the most well-known). I went to Dordoni once because I was accompanying a friend who was playing with her band at a female punk night (three bands, including hers, of rather questionable quality), and I remember a hilarious half-fight that broke out between the vegan at the entrance and an amphetamine-fueled guy who was calling him a faggot for that reason. I really didn't think it was one of the top spots for these filthy genres :-)

I've never really liked them, but this album isn't too bad; it has at least four pretty cool tracks (Do I Wanna Know?, R U Mine, One for the Road, and Fireside) and the rest, except for Mad Sounds (more of a mimicry than a tribute to the good Lou) and I Want It All, is at a good level. It's one of those albums that will be nice to rediscover some songs from.

It's probably their album that I like the least, even though it's still great. Am I the only one who can't stand Thank You?

Great album this one, I prefer it both to Turbe Giovanili (it bores me a little, but it's still nice) and to the things made with Uomini di mare.

I might try this out of curiosity, but I don't expect anything from Placebo. That said, Without You I'm Nothing is a really great album for me. Then, from what I've heard, they've put out a few other good tracks here and there.

I'd definitely see them live in a heartbeat :-)

No, but wait, I'm not saying that Lemmy could be J Mascis xD However, I see a certain underlying carelessness in the songwriting, a bit of approximation, in the sense that the few melodic ideas present are not developed at all, but left there in a raw state. In my opinion, their goal is the continuous sonic impact that you can feel from the beginning to the end of the album, and consequently, the songwriting is functional to that.

Well, for me they're definitely better than Yuck, who are just emulators. Here I see something more that might bring some surprises over time. Great album, well-made noise that doesn’t make you miss the lack of strong songs at the base (which might not be there for a specific choice, who knows). Nice review :-)
