As a rating for the review, I give you a 5 because you are the first one brave enough to write a review about De Andrè in here, but I can’t forgive you for that first sentence :) Regards

The last common thread always tightly linked to the theme of death is war. In fact, the condemnation of war. And here I start to struggle for words because what "La guerra di Piero" represents for my upbringing is almost impossible to explain. It’s a song that truly changed my life. It’s an element that helped shape who I am. It’s not just a song. It’s a manifesto of values.
Love and death are therefore the main themes that guide the strange characters of this album, which De André narrates as a medieval bard. An intellectual bard who appears from the very beginning as a foreign body. A bard who sings songs that speak of the different, of a past that speaks to the present, manifesting as the prelude to a changing society. Courageous songs. Songs like stones that, like the works of Shakespeare, address themes such as life, love, and death.

Love and death often intertwine in these songs as if they were two sides of the same coin, which is life itself, sometimes seen as a great joke. Another common thread can be found in the bourgeois hypocrisy that De André stigmatizes with irony and sarcasm drawn directly from the rich French tradition of Brassens and Villon (Old professor, what are you looking for at that door / perhaps the one who alone can give you a lesson / the one you disdainfully call your public wife by day. / The one who at night sets the price on your desires / You will seek her, you will call for her more than one night / you will rise defeated, postponing everything to the twenty-seventh / when you will cash in, you will waste half your pension / ten thousand lire to hear you say "pretty kitty and big baby").

De André's reading of love, however, is not taken for granted or trivial, as often happened during those years. Sometimes it strikes at the heart, other times it leaves a bitter taste. Few have managed it, but no one like him. Perhaps also thanks to his warm, deep voice, capable each time, with every listen, of evoking a different emotion from the depths of the soul. A voice that did not require elaborate instrumentation. A guitar and a few chords, and the miracle was done. Another theme of the album is death, seen this time from different perspectives, from the laughter of the dying who can’t wait to join the damned to reveal all the wrong lottery numbers (Il testamento), to Michè's suicide or Marinella's death in the river.

“All Fabrizio De André” was released in 1966 and is essentially the anthology of Fabrizio De André's first 45 RPM records. Therefore, by intention, it cannot be considered a “concept album,” unlike many other recordings by the Genoese singer-songwriter (like “Storia di un impiegato,” for example). However, it may be partly so in its results. Analyzing the structure of the lyrics, it is indeed possible to uncover some underlying threads, some themes that coherently intertwine to outline a homogeneous picture. De André paints a world where stories of ordinary people unfold—of soldiers, bourgeois, women, and whores, of lovers and the dying. These stories belong to the defeated, the destitute, and often carry the bitter taste of life through, precisely, some recurring themes. Among these, the first is undoubtedly love, present in all its facets: from lost love (“Canzone dell’amore perduto”), to crazy and senseless love (“La ballata dell’amore cieco”), to desperate love (“La ballata di Michè”) and eternal love (“Bussò cent’anni ancora alla sua porta,” “La canzone di Marinella”).

After reading your review, I felt an overwhelming urge to light up a cigarette because the initial comparison you made is, in my opinion, absolutely unacceptable. I don’t want to ignite a sterile controversy with this; I prefer to end the discussion here. However, I did enjoy the emotional part of the review. Nevertheless, I believe that these songs deserve to be told a bit more, a bit deeper. Given that the comments section can serve this purpose, I take the opportunity to do so, hoping to provide some insights for a potential debate on De Andrè.
