I could write a novel about this record, born from a chance encounter, from fortuitous circumstances that stirred thoughts in Manfred Eicher's mind, whose words in the CD booklet are as intense and meaningful as few. I listened to the album and I have to say that revisiting it, I find myself in the description you made. In fact, it had already passed through my hands and I didn’t remember, but I had somewhat underestimated it. The interpretations are very elegant, Minuano takes on new interest in the vocal version, hard to believe but it's true. In short, a gem, thx. If a canonical remake is expected, then it’s clear that the version of Paranoid Android might seem boring. I know three different interpretations of Mehldau's, and in my opinion, this is the best one because the long introduction cleverly disguises the piece that is slowly reconstructed. And its spirit remains unchanged. Then... "genius of the piano" is an expression used only by those who have criticized him. Genius maybe not, but talent and innovation in Mehldau are abundant. It’s not easy to stand out as a jazz pianist this way with all the heavyweights behind us. Then - as usual - if you don’t like it, respect. Al Pacino quoting Bill Evans made me want to listen to him again. Bye.
