@there: the suite you mention is the quintessence of progressive... it manages to alter my mood, a sense of "unease" and loneliness is felt even if you don’t know the lyrics... divine

@holdsworth: I really don't think so!

While I prefer the "first generation" Crimson, this little disc isn't bad! I second Blackdog: it's depressing and gloomy...the beauty of an album is primarily determined by the emotions it can evoke!

@Melissa: I completely agree! In fact, in one of my earlier comments, I wrote that one cannot give an exact definition of prog... personally, I interpret it as: innovation, experimentation, and the search for something that goes beyond… (beyond what?) and for this reason, I believe that the album in question (which I adore!!) is not exactly prog in that sense! I think King Crimson and Van Der Graaf (just to name two) have created something that I still define as "being beyond"!

Take "pawn Hearts", for example: I don't think you can talk about a poorer prog than that! Well, tastes are tastes, and that’s the beauty of it!

The Van Der Graaf Generator were "beyond" even in their early days, and the beauty is that they continue to be so even today!

@Melissa: The beauty of the album is beyond question, but in my opinion, it can't be considered a truly "progressive" work.

Stuffy is a strong word... I've been listening to it for years and it continues to fascinate me... some records written over 30 years ago are still more relevant than certain stuff that is circulating today in stores. Then, if you feel like exploring, the world is full of also new bands that are quite good... progressive is too vague a definition, it expresses everything and nothing.

But how beautiful is the flute solo in "Firth Of Fifth".....I LOVE this album!
