I really like these "bourgeois" considerations.

To those who have not yet had the misfortune of reading it:
LXIII. As he directed these words and others of the same tenor to everyone, he embraced his wife and, a bit moved by the fate that was unfolding at that moment, he begged and urged her to calm her grief and not to let it overwhelm her in the future, but to find in the memory of his virtuous life a dignified support to bear the heartfelt sorrow of her lost husband. His wife, however, declared that death was also destined for her, and asked for the hand of the executioner. Then Seneca, whether he did not wish to oppose the glory of his wife or was moved by the fear of leaving unprotected the one who was solely dear to his heart, said: “I had shown you how to alleviate the pain of your life; you, instead, have chosen the honor of death: I will not be the one to dissuade you from offering such an example. The courage of this fearless end will be equal for me and for you, but the brilliance of fame will be greater in your death.” After saying these words, their veins were severed with a single blow. Seneca, since his old and weakened body offered a slow exit for the blood due to lack of food, also severed the veins in his legs and knees, and, overwhelmed by cruel suffering, so as not to weaken his wife's courage and not to be dragged himself into yielding to her torments, he urged her to move to another room. Even in the final moments, with his eloquence not failing him, he summoned the scribes and dictated many pages, which I refrain from recounting in other words, as they were distributed verbatim.

Beautiful, both the review and the statue. You made me recall Tacitus' translations on the death of Seneca, even if those were embarrassing, which your review is not. I think of this guy who takes three hours to die, gets cut all over to let out more blood, stuff that even emos are better at injuring themselves... meanwhile, he’s giving these long speeches like a master philosopher, those damn Stoics... this is a hell of a death.

I'm not saying it's inappropriate, but I've always been bothered by the "comparison" with Kafka. The Desert of the Tartars is one of those novels I would take with me to a deserted island.

I had read that they would represent a sexist utopia and that the Big Smurf would be the comic/cartoon version of a well-known mustached man (that's why enbar is super excited about the USSR xD)... but when I was a kid, I watched them a lot!
