Van der Graaf: The Quiet Zone / The Pleasure Dome
File Audio I have it ★★★★★
Great record, perhaps slightly better than the excellent World Record. The sounds become more "acoustic" and "accessible," yet still of high quality. I still wonder why I didn't discover the generator sooner...

Honestly, this is not a 5-star album, absolutely! It's a good album, but the comparison with the past and with Still Life is almost embarrassing. Unfortunately, it's the only album by the generator that I don't love, along with 'ALT' which I think is terrible instead XD.

    Let's say it's a 5 rounded up. I'm generous with the grades.
  • tonysoprano
    30 aug 16
    It's a free 5.
  • tonysoprano
    30 aug 16
It corresponds to an 8 or 8.5 if there were some sort of scale, although here on Debaser I don't like to give numerical ratings.

    30 aug 16
I have definitively eliminated ratings, even the stars. I would remove the ones I've already given if I didn't know that doing so would flood the homepage with albums I've de-collected years ago, which doesn't seem nice. However, in some ways this album is fresher and more unique than "World Record," and it has 4-5 remarkable tracks. Hammill sets up a new lineup, removing the Generator, and instead of Banton and Jackson, he brings back Nic Potter and adds an amazing violinist (check out String Driven Thing), further renewing the sound of his band which takes on a different shape. On its own, it wouldn't deserve the highest rating; it's inferior to the previous albums, but it has its merits, definitely. Then "Vital" will come along, a little gem not to be forgotten.

"Alt" was yet another experiment, this time not going very well.
  • tonysoprano
    30 aug 16
In fact, I was saying that this is a free 5, since I don't like to take away. The 4 points are deserved by the debut, given that there are many ideas, not entirely managed properly.

Alright, you're quoting Vital mondo cane. One of the ultimate live performances!

A record that I appreciated a lot (even though it can't compare to the "sacred monsters") is Present. A great album.
  • hjhhjij
    30 aug 16
"Present" is a great album, a return (of the VDGG brand since Hammill hasn't stopped for a moment in the meantime) that is excellent. For me, it remains the best of the new era, which has always been on the decline until now.

I’m missing the Trisector generator, A Grounding, and Alt. Let’s see…
  • tonysoprano
    30 aug 16
three albums... and I've finished the entire discography of a band I've loved madly...
  • tonysoprano
    30 aug 16
Anyway, Hammill has probably made about sixty albums in his career, holy shit. But that man takes a moment to breathe XD
  • hjhhjij
    30 aug 16
No. He had a heart attack and shortly after came out with his best album of the 2000s, indeed the best since "And Close as This."
  • tonysoprano
    30 aug 16
    Incredible...what album is it?
  • tonysoprano
    30 aug 16
I just saw it, sat for more than 40 minutes... oh my god... anyway, up to Present, no VDGG album has seriously disappointed me.
  • SalvaDM
    30 aug 16
You've already said it all! I’d like to add that 'Patience' remains an incredible album and one of the best from VDGG, while I didn't enjoy 'Trisector' aside from the suite 'Over The Hill', in addition to 'ALT'. As for Hammill, I stopped at 'Out Of Water' from '90. After that, I only know 'Fireships', 'Incoherence', and 'Consequences'.
What other albums do you think I should listen to, @[hjhhjij]?
  • hjhhjij
    30 aug 16
Many of his best works from 1990 onwards you already know. You’re missing, absolutely, "Roaring Forties" and "The Fall of the House of Usher," an operatic experiment, no less, by Hammill, which for me is one of his most beautiful works from that decade. He also made a second edition in 1999; the original is from 1993.

Thank you hj, as soon as I can, I will listen to them! The problem with Hammill is that he has made a million albums ahah

The classic album full of good things, even though certain "peaks" are missing (which VDGG had accustomed us to since their debut). The elegiac "The Siren Song," the pyrotechnic baroque-rock of "Cat's Eye" (the best track on the album by a wide margin), and the intricate "The Sphinx in the Face" are three more remarkable episodes in PH's vast repertoire.

"Cat's Eye" is a step above the rest, I agree.
Van der Graaf Generator: Vital
File Audio I have it ★★★★★
...but damn it. Even live! Monstrous in every way!
Van der Graaf Generator: Still Life
File Audio I have it ★★★★★
"Pilgrims" is illegal and painful, the title track and "La Rossa" two dark masterpieces, "My Room" an indispensable and sweet masterpiece... "Childlike Faith in Childhood's End" needs no description. Does this masterpiece deserve a 5? Perhaps even a 5 is too little...
Van Der Graaf Generator: Present
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
They are almost 60 years old. So what? In the meantime, in 2005, they released this monstrous album, after almost 30 years from that majestic live of "Vital." Hammill's vocals have not lost the aggression and energy of the past, David Jackson, Hugh Banton, and Guy Evans. The Van Der Graaf Generator are back, and no comeback could have been better!
Van Der Graaf Generator: Pawn Hearts
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
A journey in search of the solution against loneliness, able to move you in that damned poetic finale...
Many ideas, not yet managed to perfection. It’s still far from the masterpieces that will come in the future, but if a band debuts with a song like "Afterwards," they definitely deserve the 4 balloons without much doubt.
This album is more than enough for me to define Van Der Graaf Generator as the Kings of progressive rock. I honestly have no more words.

I had already told you that this album is a huge masterpiece (five memorable songs) that easily rivals "Pawn Hearts," so I happily note your appreciation. And I also recommend "Godbluff," "Still Life," and all of his solo career up to "The Black Box."

This album and "Pawn Hearts" are among the most beautiful things I've ever heard. It rivals "Pawn Hearts." I will calmly listen to the other albums as well.

Yes, now think about that pointless hassle of the high school exam. Once that's done, you'll have a ton of time until October to discover great music.

I'm one of those groups that if someone comes in saying "it's the greatest band in history," you can calmly say, "well... that may be."

Sure, it's a shame that outside of Debaser, in prog, they usually only mention Yes, King Crimson, and Genesis, and no one ever talks about these phenomena, which are never forced or lengthy.

You're wrong, Van Der Graaf Generator, after decades, still have a large following of admirers (especially here in Italy).
  • tonysoprano
    12 jun 16
In Italy for sure. But they are not very famous.
  • hjhhjij
    12 jun 16
Bluesboy is right to say that it rivals Pawn Hearts. In fact, there are those who prefer this, and I don't blame them at all.
  • tonysoprano
    12 jun 16
I love this album, and I place it on par with Pawn Hearts, even though I prefer it by millimeters, because it made me discover Van Der Graaf and because it has A Plague, which always moves me. Then, of course, it's understandable for someone to prefer the other because they have a practically identical level of high quality.

I want to ask you a question, can the Area be classified as progressive?
  • Hank Monk
    13 jun 16
Well, I remember that Pawn Hearts (somehow) managed to reach number 1 on the charts here. The fans love it :)
  • tonysoprano
    13 jun 16
In fact, from what I've noticed, progressive is very acclaimed in Italy.
  • hjhhjij
    13 jun 16
Area are a clear demonstration of what a pain categorization can be. Sure, they can fit into progressive (literally, more progressive than them...) but they are also avant-rock/Jazz-rock/fusion/free-ja zz/ethnic/avant-jazz/even "pop" at times/avant-garde and a bunch of other fancy words that mean nothing.
  • tonysoprano
    13 jun 16
There is no doubt that they were fusion. However, I can glimpse something prog.
Van Der Graaf Generator: Godbluff
File Audio I have it ★★★★★
After four years of "hiatus," Peter Hammill reunites Van Der Graaf Generator: needless to say, this is yet another masterpiece. But what the hell kind of band is this??
  • bluesboy94
    17 jun 16
What was I telling you? Even "Godbluff" is a masterpiece (with an "Arrow" that is exhausting, yet wonderful).
  • tonysoprano

The incredible thing is that here they are less frenetic compared to its two predecessors, but they are still intense... I have no words.

Van Morrison: Moondance
File Audio I have it ★★★★★
The "human" masterpiece by Van Morrison. Stunning.
Van Morrison: Astral Weeks
File Audio I have it ★★★★★
This is not an album; it is something greater, it is the attempt of a genius, Van Morrison, to manifest his joy and his anguish to the world. This is a work of art, a delightful arrow that pierces into our hearts.
Van Morrison: Veedon Fleece
File Audio I have it ★★★★★
Despite that absolute masterpiece of "Astral Weeks" being unreachable, it is still impossible to resist the charm of "Veedon Fleece."

Definitely impossible... Those sounds... That land. The purest Ireland right here.
Van Morrison: Common One
File Audio I have it ★★★★★
Music quality levels too high to be measurable... "Haunts Of Ancient Peace" begins immediately with a heartfelt blow... then we add the ecstasy of the 15-minute "Summertime In England," and we have yet another excellent work by Van Morrison... what a genius...
Victor Jara: Pongo En Tus Manos Abiertas
File Audio I have it ★★★★★
Sometimes, to admire the intrinsic beauty of an album, it is enough to be a dung beetle...thank you @[lector]
Vince Gilligan: Breaking Bad
File Video I lack ★★★★★
Breaking Bad is the best television series of all time, the only one capable of reaching perfection. Other series, like The Wire, have tried to achieve perfection, but none have come close like Breaking Bad did. It completely transformed my life, being the first TV show I watched consistently from start to finish. Immense.
