Dante Alighieri: La Divina Commedia
Cartaceo I have it ★★★★★
Let's start with this premise: I am a novice in literature, and since I haven't read the entire Divina Commedia, I can't make a complete judgment about Dante (in fact, I've "only" read the most important cantos). Nevertheless, the Divina Commedia is an immense masterpiece, a milestone that should be read at least once in a lifetime, whether for school obligation or personal interest. In this work, Dante denounces a corrupt and ruthless world but hints at a glimmer of hope for the future in a very poetic finale.
Masterpiece! What other words could I use to describe it?! 11 stunning songs that tell the memorable tales of Ziggy Stardust, an alien who landed by chance on a world rife with corruption and hypocrisy.

I've listened to this album a hell of a lot of times and I still can’t appreciate it. Let’s say Bowie has never really driven me wild. I couldn't tell you why... It's definitely a limitation on my part, but I just can’t get into it! However, I don’t rule out the possibility of changing my mind in the future, as has already happened with other artists...

A matter of taste. For example, I prefer Bowie to Springsteen, who still doesn't drive me crazy.
David Bowie: Hunky Dory
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
Bought at a quite reasonable price (€10.99). A masterpiece that finally heralds Bowie's talent. "Changes" and "Life On Mars?" are undoubtedly shining gems within this stunning album.
Death: Symbolic
File Audio I have it ★★★★★
The Madonna...jokes aside, one of my absolute favorites. The absolute masterpiece by Death, which marks their definitive consecration as the best metal band ever. There's nothing to say, everything they do is gold.

for me too, it’s their/his best or at least the one I’m most attached to.

Human is better, just a bit, but that's how it's always been for me. I think I’m one of the few who has seen Death live twice... Zero Tolerance...

Damn, what a butt. I like Human, but I'll always prefer Symbolic.
  • De...Marga...

So Symbolic is definitely more complete, more polished in its details, played brilliantly by a lineup that impressed with its technical skills. However, Human is more compact, more overwhelming. Just think of the opening trio "Flattening of Emotions-Suicide Machine-Together As One." Chuck was a huge innovator in the Metal realm.

I also prefer Human, even though, in the end, the last 4 albums by Death are all great.

I would also include Spiritual Healing.

spiritual healing I don't have it, damn it! I only have the last 4

Spiritual Healing is my least favorite. Leprosy, for instance, I'm particularly attached to (the first one I bought, with that orange CD... awesome). Human was a breath of fresh air. There’s Cosmic Sea and above all their best song in my opinion: Lack Of Comprehension :) Dema, you know I kind of envy you for all the amazing concerts you've seen :)

Well, I much prefer the first two albums by Death: "Scream Bloody Gore" and "Leprosy". Badass and uncompromising Thrash/Death. However, I also loved "Symbolic" a lot. I rank it, along with "Human", among the best of the second phase.

Unfortunately, Hank Monk, I have to disagree with you! Of course, I respect opinions, but when it comes to Death, I can say there isn't a worst album of theirs! I appreciate them all, even the first two which are much more raw and focused on absolute executional violence. With Spiritual Healing, Chuck starts looking forward, with tracks like the title track and Living Monstruosity, progressing in sound, seeking greater cohesiveness, and stretching the duration times of the individual songs. I saw them live twice: I was completely destroyed in the wild pogo that erupted. What a thrill, damn it. What an extraordinary band Death was; it's a shame it all ended too soon. Sometimes I can't help but wonder how far Chuck could have pushed his innate genius... COSMIC SEA...

I must have written this several times already, but: a Spiritual Healing for Obituary was a masterpiece (Cause Of Death). For Death, it was a transitional period. I prefer the raw and badass violence of the first two. And the exciting controlled and ultra-technical violence of the later phase.

Hank, you surely know that on both albums, Spiritual Healing and Cause of Death, that marvel of a guitarist James Murphy played the six-string; you also know that the Death album was released in February 1990 and the Obituary one in the fall of the same year. All this to say that the band of the Tardy brothers took a lot of inspiration from the Death sound of that period, thanks to James' presence, who surely brought with him the experience gained a few months earlier with Chuck Schuldiner's band. Two albums that are always and anyway devastating, even though I prefer Spiritual. Hey dude...TURNED INSIDE OUT...

:) I completely agree with your analysis (and I didn’t mention the Cause of Death by chance). This is to emphasize that an album like this cannot be considered bad (its twin is the gem of the Obituary discography). However, in a series of albums that are so beautiful, for me it remains the least focused.

The problem is that a discussion has started about the best Death album...
  • Hank Monk
    10 may 16
Well, it doesn't seem like a "discussion" to me at all... basically, we said that they're all good-looking. We just have different opinions on who is the least good-looking :)

You just need to finalize the band of the pro loco of Bagnoreggio and "I Teppisti dei Sogni" and you're done. Come on, you can do it!

I have expressed my total love for Death many times; and their greatest album will forever remain the unattainable "Human" (34 minutes of auditory bliss). I have always considered "Individual Thought Patterns" to be the heaviest, most metal album due to the participation of that guitar phenomenon named Andy LaRocque. And when you also have Gene Hoglan and Steve DiGiorgio at your disposal, a new masterpiece couldn't help but emerge. I am deeply attached to the album because it’s the only work by Death that I own on vinyl, since way back in 1993...MENTALLY BLIND...

Tony, don't be touchy! I just wanted to have a little fun with you. I was trying to tell you that you have all the time to define them all, so don't rush.
Actually, I'm just a bit envious: I envy you the joy of discovery.
But don't stay so anchored to the past; the young must live in the future. It's the curse of the old to live in the past. And what about people like me? Well, people like me have to deal with the present...............
Deep purple: In Rock
CD Audio I lack ★★★★★
Monumental, fundamental album that marks the birth of the TRUE Deep Purple, pioneers of hard rock and heavy metal.
Deep Purple: Made In Japan
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
Incredible live performance, historic, one of the best and most charismatic ever. Technically flawless, it falls just short of perfection due to a slight "out of tune" moment from Ian Gillan in Highway Star, but those are just details.
