Campo di Marte: Campo di Marte
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
Great album that does justice to Italian progressive rock. Unfortunately, they have a style that is a bit more challenging than PFM, Banco, or Le Orme...
The most beautiful collection from the Swedes, masters of doom metal. It includes the most important tracks from the first four masterpieces, along with some excerpts from the live show in Stockholm in 1990. There are also a few songs from the less thrilling Chapter VI, with those annoying little keyboards ruining the dark and rhythmic magic of the music. Essential for anyone looking to quickly educate themselves about the golden years of the band.
Candlemass: Tales of creation
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
Mystical and powerful monolith of heavy-doom metal. Completes the quadrilogy of the "fantastic four." From here on, they will never be the same again (a bit like what happened to Manowar or Metallica, to be clear).
Candlemass: Ancient Dreams
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
Inferior to the debut, superior to Nightfall. Dark, fascinating, and arcane...
Candlemass: Epicus, Doomicus, Metallicus
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
The quintessential manifesto of doom metal and also one of the most beautiful albums of all time.

Epic, Metallic, Destiny...
Candlemass: Nightfall
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
Twilight. Darkness descends to subjugate the lost listener, the same one who calls for the voice of the prophet, to be guided through the grim lands of this dark dimension...

Inferior to the debut, but still a masterpiece. This is the album that marks the entrance of the Messiah (Marcolin) on vocals: it doesn't get more epic-domm than this!

I bought it on thick vinyl when I was a medallion collector.

Very nice, but the debut remains unbeatable.
Caravan: Waterloo Lily

A few days ago I mentioned my uncle. Well, how many times have I turned the plate with this show! I miss him...sigh...no; I'm not talking about my uncle (I hope that was clear, right?) Damn, if I don't get him back soon I swear I’ll lose it!!!

Beautiful, I've always liked it (almost) as much as the previous two, 5 definite stars.

I think it’s their last great work; from there on, it’s a decline (at least in my view...)

The next one is a nice album, but I agree this is the last at their peak, still for me.

I also like Cunning Stunts, especially the suite Dabsong Conshirtoe.
  • BARRACUDA BLUE

    That suite is beautiful.

Waterloo Lily is simply better than the most acclaimed In the land of Grey and Pink. The tracks just hit harder and are more beautiful, without taking anything away from the other album in question, which is still great! For me, the subsequent For Girls Who Grow Plump in the Night is also good, especially C'thlu Thlu, the end of side A, which is truly a badass piece.
But is it music?

Luckily, they made a comeback in '91, because this one and the next are quite (definitely very) weak.

I respond to both colleagues, with a certain dose of anger. This album, the debut of Carcass, along with the following "Symphonies of Sickness," represents, together with "Scum" by Napalm Death, the beginning, the birth of a new sound in the extreme realm. Grindcore played and produced deliberately poorly, terribly, but that has pointed a way forward for a myriad of bands that have drawn inspiration from these rotten, oppressive sounds with lyrics that are almost beyond comments for their brutality. For me, this is absolutely GREAT MUSIC, a punch in the gut that shakes mind and body...GENITAL GRINDER...Then, as my friend ziltoid says, with "Necroticism..." things change: be it for a production worthy of the name, be it for the arrival of that sacred monster Michael Amott on guitar, be it for the shift towards more distinctly Death Metal sounds, Carcass reaches their undeniable masterpiece. Anyway, the first two albums of the band are, for me, two absolute gems...WOW...
Cat Stevens: Teaser and the firecat
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
The essence of the cantautorato, adorned with some energetic folk-rock touches. A gentle and visionary breath of notes...
Charlie Chaplin: The Kid
DVD Video I have it ★★★★★
"A film that brings a smile, and perhaps a tear."

Quote from the opening credits. If you know a more effective way to define this masterpiece, feel free to chime in...

Personally, I wouldn't have included the "maybe" :)
Charlie Chaplin: Monsieur Verdoux
DVD Video I lack ★★★★★
Never have I seen a Chaplin so cynical and socially pessimistic, with a comedic component skillfully woven into a tragic and at times almost dark story. Brilliantly executed, although it remains light years away from the love declarations that served as morals during the silent era.

One of my favorite movies, and my favorite by Chaplin. Monstrous.
Cirith Ungol: Frost and Fire
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
The most direct of the band. The opener is pure adrenaline, immediately tempered by the dark and rhythmic progression of "Chaos Descends." From there, a series of epic metal transpositions of great class and measured power unfolds. Special mention goes to the title track and "Nadsokor," one of the most captivating and ecstatic anthems to epic metal ever conceived by the human mind.
Cirith Ungol: King of the Dead
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
Dare... venture forth... and may your souls return from the grim paths of Hades...
Cisco: La Lunga Notte
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
The former Modena City Ramblers turns around already for its debut album. Pure songwriting for a gentle and melancholic record. Let yourself be carried away by this rustic unplugged.
Three hours of bliss! Unmatched! One of the first operas in history. The fusion between Renaissance style and Baroque style is clearly perceptible (we are indeed in 1641). First performance at the San Cassiano in Venice.
Comus: First Utterance
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
Progressive, folk, psychedelia, world music, for a night spent among the spectral branches of this arcane forest. Unmissable!

There was also the compilation that included all of this along with three really cool bonus tracks. That collection was a gem ("Song to Comus," what else could it be titled?).

BGO, like Repertoire and Esoteric, are still the only labels that go hunting for the hidden gems of the past. I have many records from these labels, and they are also low-priced. I'll probably get the Comus as well, so them too...

What can I say? One of my all-time favorite albums. Folk that's the wildest, most acid, and visionary. Esoteric...
coroner: punishment for decadence
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
Great album. They sound like a clearer version of Bathory (the self-titled debut from the Swedes). Plus, it's not the usual "cold" thrash from some more famous bands. There's a soul behind it all. Tetra; but still a soul! The production sacrifices the power unleashed by the instruments, but weaves a dark mood that manages to evoke the darkness in the ears of the listener.

I have the entire discography but I don't remember Grin very well; in fact, I mentioned it because I just gave it a spin today. At this point, you’ve piqued my curiosity: thanks for the mention. I'm going to listen to it again...

"Grin" is a masterpiece. Very challenging and experimental. You need to dive into it. Definitely check it out.

Cyndi Lauper: She's So Unusual
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
In an era where there is a bittersweet awareness that much of commercial pop should be thrown in the organic waste bin, here’s an excellent example that honors this debated genre. One of those records that captures the listener's attention, convincing them that good music can also be simple, direct, and accessible.
