Genesis: Invisible Touch
CD Audio I have it ★★★
"An Invisible Thatcher" gets a passing grade out of fondness, then the 'mascherù' in the video of "Land of Confusion" scared me when I was little haha.

Yes, I used to say that too once: passing for affection. Then I realized that no, come on, this is an indefensible album.

I'm not crazy about them at all, but the '80s Genesis (especially the album Duke) still had a certain artistic consistency without falling into the trivial.

    18 jan 17
It's true that "Duke" has always been a great album for me, but... Without EVER falling into the banal? Artistic coherence? No, guys, with all my love for them, no. At least not in this album and in part of the two previous ones, not even a little. And they’re quite banal, sometimes even irritating. "Illegal Alien" should really be illegal.

Look, I agree with you, there isn't that much at stake. But what I want to say is that despite their abrupt "change of course," which I personally think started from Follow me and onwards, they have nonetheless consistently kept the balance there without weighing it down with excessive pomp (see Phil solo).

In my opinion, when listening to the Genesis of the '80s, one should avoid thinking about their past and pretend it's another band, in order to better appreciate their more radio-friendly spirit.

I'm sorry, but this speech makes little sense to me. They have transformed into a group solely dedicated to the most crass, commercial music for a pittance. This isn't a Pop shift; during the time of "Duke," they wrote some very beautiful pop songs ("Heataze"), and then they wrote some horrendous ones. It's not a matter of comparing that period to the '70s; of course I think about it because they were once a great band and then they became a cash machine, but I'm not making comparisons. Simply put, "Invisible Rutt" is the album of a terrible band. A band of caricatures. I prefer the pomp of Phil as a solo artist, at least the early Phil, to things like the title track of this piece. There are contemporary pop groups that objectively disintegrate them with a snap of the fingers. Also, I want to clarify that the only album I find truly dreadful is this one, and perhaps the previous self-titled one, which has 2-3 very nice things but containing "Illegal Alien" within it is a crime against humanity.
  • hjhhjij
    18 jan 17
And then it’s fine that they changed genres, but I don’t view music solely in terms of labels; it’s simply about quality. If you used to make “Fountain of Salmacis” and then you make “Land of Confusion,” there’s been some kind of decline, and it’s not a matter of genres, it’s a matter of good music and bad music. I don’t know if I’m explaining myself well. You can’t compare two different stylistic periods; it highlights the qualitative drop. Which is also evident from “Duke” compared to “Insaziable Merd.”

Because between "Guide Vocal" and "Into Deep" lies the entire Grand Canyon.

Illegal Alien, the more you mention it, the more I can’t help but laugh just at the title. However, despite everything, I think we basically agree. You will surely agree that the true genesis of distinct musical creativity is Gabriel. The albums we've mentioned should be regarded as pop records with the discovery of some gems perhaps (like, I repeat, Duke foremost).
  • mrbluesky

the one from '83 wasn't bad, where "home by the sea" was.
  • mrbluesky

here the only one I would save is "the brazilian"
  • hjhhjij
    18 jan 17
"You will surely agree that the true Genesis of pronounced musical creativity is Gabriel." Be, no, why? There were Hackett, once Phillips. Of course, after Gabriel proved to be the most brilliant and innovative, that's obvious, but to demonstrate that pronounced musical creativity also existed in the others, especially in Banks, we have "A Trick of the Tail" and "Wind and Wuthering," which are two masterpieces, guys. Then remember that most of the musical composition is marked by Banks and Rutherford; Gabriel dominated the lyrics and the live stage setup. mrbluesky, let's say that "The Brazilian" shines compared to the rest. The self-titled album from 1983 has "Mama," which is definitely a good pop song, and also the first part of "Home By the Sea," that's true. But it's a bit too little. And, I repeat, "Illegal Alien"... Throw that 1983 album away, do yourself a favor.
  • hjhhjij
    18 jan 17
In short, Rinaldi, much of the early Genesis creativity came from Banks/Rutherford or Hackett or Phillips (specifically musically) with some contributions from Gabriel because, digging deeper, it was certainly a team effort. Also with the lyrics, did you know that the lyrics of "The Fountain of Salmacis," for example, are by Banks?
  • RinaldiACHTUNG
    18 jan 17
Yes, of course, Genesis were Genesis and they don’t need any introduction, yet the fact remains that while others were making their funny videos, Gabriel released Red Rain and Games Without Frontiers. Anyway, I will catch up on the solo albums of the "others."
  • hjhhjij
    18 jan 17
Ahahahaha yes, yes as I said AFTER Gabriel proved to be the most brilliant, innovative, and broad-minded (collaborations with Fripp foremost). However, in the "others" there were no longer Hackett and Phillips, and their solo careers were certainly not "Brilliant" like Gabriel's but undoubtedly consistent and of great quality, less versatile, but excellent. As for the three little pigs, in my opinion, Rutherford's first solo is very valid (with Ant Phillips involved, in fact), then the rest is rubbish. Collins has two very valid ones, and Banks has nice ones with the first and "Still." But Banks is in the running with Collins for the most embarrassing things he has done. However, in the end, Collins wins, come on.
  • hjhhjij
    18 jan 17
And in "Games Without Frontiers," as in other tracks from that crazy album, there were backing vocals by Kate Bush. Backing vocals. And Bush in 1980 was already definitely someone, you know, not an unknown. Just saying, you know, just saying.
  • hjhhjij

Well, she did have Roy Harper as a second voice (and vice versa) in the same year :D What lovely people.
  • RinaldiACHTUNG
    18 jan 17
The Bush... what can I say? Among the people who worked with the crazy Gabriel is the extraordinary Youssou Ndour (but now I’m digressing). Anyway, the albums you mentioned, out of fairness, I want to listen to, maybe I'll find something cool in them.
  • hjhhjij
    18 jan 17
The ones I've mentioned are, in my opinion, good/excellent albums, in fact it's enough not to go too far XD The first two by Collins are partly good pop/soul as he likes it, and partly reflect the atmospheres and drumming style of Gabriel's third, where Collins also played. Then, oh, there are the solo careers of Ant Phillips and Steve Hackett—there you could really get creative, just in case.
  • hjhhjij
    18 jan 17
Youssou, a great one, back then. His '80s records are beautiful if you like the genre. Besides his appearances on "In Your Eyes" and "Passion."
  • hjhhjij
    18 jan 17
Also try the (I believe) first album by Frida (the former Abba), yes, produced by Collins himself, with that same unmistakable drum sound (it's always Philco on the drums). A good synth-pop album from those years, come on.
  • RinaldiACHTUNG
    18 jan 17
Here, I'll dive into it. Oh, by the way, since we brought it up, do you know this video? basically old Phil asks where Larry Mullen is and Edge replies, "He hurt himself, you know, when a drummer decides to try singing..." Ahahahah
  • hjhhjij
    18 jan 17
Eh, what does Collins care, the biggest bullshitter in the prog scene XD But it is funny, yes.

Let's say it's a 3.5 rounded up. Beautiful "Pictures of a City" and "Cadence and Cascade", stunning the title track in the style of "Epitaph", "Cat Food" is nice too, but I really can't stand "Devil's Triangle"...
Listened to it well recently. While it's not in my top 3 of progressive (Selling, Nursery, and Foxtrot, not in order ;)), it's an absolutely EPIC album; Robert Fripp has been a genius in his own way...
