hellraiser

An odyssey in space, a new planet for a new life. All of this conceived by the mind of Paul Kantner, who changes the name of his famous band and creates this excellent album, aided by the wonderful Grace Slick and exceptional guests such as Garcia, CSN, and many others. I have always preferred my beloved Jefferson Airplane, but this album is a great listen.

For me, this is a masterpiece, the first piece of the swan song of the Bay Area of the sixties at the beginning of the '70s. Then there will be Crosby's "If I Could" (which featured a ton of musicians from the scene, it was a wild jumble) and Garcia's solo debut. In between, the celebratory Joni of "Woodstock" and then Young's "Ambulance Blues," from Canadian to Canadian, from celebration to the tombstone of an era.

Yes dear Hj, an unrepeatable era. This is a great album, I didn't explain myself well, but whenever I feel like listening to the band I prefer to put on Bathing or Volunteers, I'm more attached to those, that's all there is to it. Happy St. Stephen's Day, yesterday lunch at my place, today again at my "sister-in-law’s," I can't take it anymore, my goodness... greetings!

You didn't explain yourself poorly; I understood perfectly. I just shared my opinion about the album :) Yesterday, from the very early afternoon until one in the morning (and we even went to bed early) at my aunt's with my dad's relatives—lunch at three and dinner at ten—I'm dying XD
Pearl Jam: Vitalogy
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
Perhaps their most troubled and dark album, very powerful, energetic, with moments of classic ballads like the stunning "Better Man"...

Twenty years have passed since its release; and the big vinyl I own, with a beautiful inner booklet, has not yet stopped spinning on my turntable; at rather regular intervals.

Here, I've never liked them. Except for this album, which I have always found beautiful. Here they are finally stripped of a certain pompousness and reduced to the bone… more raw, electric, visceral… and free to experiment. This direction will partly be maintained on 'No Code', although I already like it much less… then they returned to the arenas. What a shame…

Their best, even for me, no code is at the same quality levels while being almost the opposite of this musically (and that's a good thing) but it doesn't grab me like Vitalogy.
Pentangle: Basket Of Light

A few simple words to describe their 1969 masterpiece, MAGNIFICO, in every way... atmospheres, instrumental skills, McShee with her wonderful voice, lyrics inspired by Arthur, the Middle Ages, ancestral times...
Peter Hammill: Fool's Mate
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
Very good album, although I've only had the chance to listen to it once and it requires more attention. Great but I think it's far from the milestones of VDGG from that period, nonetheless this is a work that definitely deserves…

Great work. Rationally speaking, "Over" has been the turning point of his career (and for this alone, and without considering the remarkable quality of the songs, it deserves to be listened to by anyone wanting to approach Hammill's art).

I received it only yesterday, but I had the chance to listen to it once, and very attentively. Truly an excellent job, nothing to say, an artist with a capital A without a doubt, both with VDGG and as a soloist. I also spotted his new album on the shelves of my trusted store, but I prefer to gradually discover his previous works, to get a more comprehensive idea of his career. Best regards!
Peter Hammill: The Future Now
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
After three or four listens, I can say it's an excellent album; Hammill proves to be a great artist with talent to spare. It's a unique album, with sounds I'm not very accustomed to but it's beautiful, especially the splendid "If I Could," my favorite of the bunch. A solid 4.5, I reserve the 5+ only for his great classics with VDGG...

Here, my only doubt is how and if you would digest the sounds of the album, but in the end, I was sure that the quality of the tracks would prevail in your judgment :) Then 4 or 5, what does it matter? I’m really glad you liked it. "If I Could" absolutely belongs among the greatest classics of good old Peter. With him, I now recommend "Over," the previous album which, trust me, you will like even more :)

Particular as a record, but to have records like this... then when someone is skilled they will always be, Hammill is worth discovering (at least for me, you seem to be his grandson with how much you know...). Anyway, Over is good, I'll find it after some effort, at least I hope...

Come on, it's not one of the hardest to find, at least I think so :) And I AM his nephew... No, uh, no that's not true :( This one is special because it marks a nice turn for Hammill towards New Wave or at least his very personal vision of it, with a lot of electronics by Hammill's standards. Something totally different from everything he had done before. An artist in constant evolution, always with great quality and plenty of ideas. I'm always happy when someone starts to discover and listen to him. You'll be in for a lot of satisfaction, Hell :D

In Rome it's definitely easier to find them; where I go it takes them a lot of time to arrive (I don't live in the woods, just to be clear, but near you there are cutting-edge shops...) Anyway, little by little I'm getting some records, it's worth the expense...

I know, I'm lucky to live in Rome. There's one with a lot of nice CDs but it's specialized in vinyl, I get really envious every time because I don't have a turntable.

I own a turntable, but I always limit myself when it comes to buying records; they cost at least ten euros more than regular CDs. In fact, while I have about 1700 original CDs, I only have around fifty vinyl records (which are of superior quality, at least in terms of aesthetic beauty). They're far too expensive... It's true that every now and then there's a second-hand market, where you can find great vinyls in good condition for 10 euros, can you imagine...

Yes, on this you are absolutely right, and that's fine, but when I see the vinyl of "In the Land of the Grey and Pink" by Caravan without being able to buy it, I start to cry.

Oh yes, those covers are deadly, just like the ones from Yes... It would be worth buying them just for that...
Pink Floyd: Meddle
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
One of my all-time favorites, especially thanks to the beautiful and hypnotic "Echoes," in my opinion one of the most gorgeous suites in history, which continues to fascinate me even after years and years of listening...
Pink Floyd: Obscured By Clouds
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
Never listened to again, recently revisited but still very relevant, a precursor to the great explosion of The Dark Side Of The Moon. Worth re-listening to multiple times, it deserves it...
Pixies: Doolittle
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
A fun album, not exactly a genre I usually listen to but enjoyable, a worthy expense. In my personal opinion, the best tracks are "Mr. Grieves", "There Goes My Gun" and the stunning "Here Comes Your Man," with a riff and a chorus that get stuck in your head right away. They remind me a lot of the garage bands of the early '60s, of course with the right differences...

Great, first round, first hit :) I hoped you’d like it, though of course it’s not even your favorite type of music, which is why I’m okay with a 4 as a rating. Happy you enjoyed it, but you forgot to mention a track among the best on the record; if you don’t mention it, you risk immediate ban :D

The monkey that goes to paradise doesn't say much to me; I guess I need to get used to it, 3 listens are a bit few... anyway, good album, not a masterpiece (obviously in my very personal opinion) but it was worth the purchase. As for the Swans, we'll have to wait a little longer; I also looked for them at Feltrinelli in Rome but no luck, patience, they will come...

Is there an easier one to find among those I recommended? Anyway, come on, I didn't mean "Monkey Gone to Heaven" (which the cover is based on), it's easier, what's the song from this album that absolutely must be mentioned among the favorites or risk getting banned from THIS site? :D

P.S.: It’s not unlikely that your appreciation will grow after a few listens; you definitely need to get used to it a bit. But not too much, since it's not really your favorite genre as already mentioned. In fact, I’m happy with the 4 and I accept it wholeheartedly; for me, it’s a success. Long live the '80s that matter :)

I finally arrive at a listening of the good Hellraiser, recommended both by hjhhjij and myself. What do you want me to say? I could talk to you about the historical importance of the Boston elves, but everything has already been written and said; I could tell you about the wonders that the album offers, but I think that too would be superfluous. So, I will just say that it remains, after decades, a sublime and wonderful record... and I am also happy that the young man from Saluzzo liked it. Bye hell.
