Tom Verlaine: Tom Verlaine
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
Listened to it again yesterday, and the minutes literally flew by. It's not my favorite of his solo works, which - by a narrow margin - remains "Dreamtime", but it does include a classic like "Kingdom Come", the typical groove of "The Grip Of Love", "Last Night", and something MASTERFUL like "Breakin' In My Heart" - a guitar duet with the late, unforgettable Ricky Wilson.

Tom Verlaine belongs to that type of rock guitarists and songwriters, controlled and rational, focused more on the aesthetic and citational aspect than on the commonly expressive one. This solo album is proof of that; it represents the continuation of the Television sound.
Tommy Lee Jones: Le Tre Sepolture
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
The greatest Tommy Lee of all time. Period. A true masterpiece of the "frontier" genre, among the most beautiful of the last decade; the cherry on top is the presence of the late Levon Helm.
Toto: Toto
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
A classic, no doubt about it. It’s not my preferred genre, but when an album includes "Rosanna," "Africa," "Make Believe," and the groove (!) of Porcaro-Hungate in "Waiting For Your Love" (which is also my favorite track), it deserves the highest accolades. Lukather is exceptional, among the best guitarists of his generation.

the mind is still David Paich, considerably overweight. Lukather, on the other hand, still plays the suave charmer with the girls.

When it comes to Rock, Peruvians know a thing or two — and then some — because they not only boast great proto-garage bands from the '60s like Los Saicos, but also delicious psych-freak-folk material well represented by these gentlemen. 1970 - an outstanding album that tele-transports San Francisco to the Andes (or the Himalayas..?).

A noteworthy mention that piques my curiosity quite a bit... Peru = Andes... I was really good at geography.
True West: Hollywood Holiday
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
Every now and then we COME BACK, perhaps, to listen to these records... and for those who haven't done so yet, well... it might be worth considering, because this is not exactly ordinary stuff. Davis, California, 1983. The home of Dream Syndicate and Thin White Rope. Do the math, 2+2.

Great band, I had another album, sold years ago, I don't remember the title. I don't think I've heard this one, I believe, the cover doesn't ring any bells.
Twink: Think Pink
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
It is superfluous to spend any more words on a record already widely delivered to Legend, except to say that when one John Adler, known as TWINK, former drummer for Tomorrow and Pretty Things, and at the time with the Pink Fairies, decided to record on his own (but with SOME guests)... this work of pure FREE FORM underground emerged: noises, psychedelia, visions, delirium... the Deviants' recipe elevated to apotheosis.

one of the best albums of visionary psychedelia. An essential album for fans of the genre.

I am speechless at this immense work, one of my touchstones for my mind greatly devastated by desecration and expressive freedom. Over-vitamin for the creative madness of the "different" soul!
(an incomplete title) a completely different Bolan from the well-known one of "Electric Warrior" & Co. With Steve Peregrine Took, he made his first appearance immersing the grooves in a manic orgy of Afghan blues, caravan rhythms, and lullabies for the nomads of Central Asia. A work much closer to Uzbekistan than to London in '68.

beautiful, a work very much tied to its time. Heard today, it is very naive music, showing all its years. This is its greatest charm.

more than anything, tribal hippie hymns, of the Age of Aquarius, dandy stuff, all very cult, but 5 stars is too much.

On the vote, I more or less agree with the review on the board. I also agree with what Gianluigi says: hippie but not rhetorical, naive, scrappy, almost unclassifiable in the end to deserve a 3, a 4, or a 5. Also historic, because it's one of the strangest records to have topped the charts - but after four years, when Marc was already the glam icon we all know (another story)...
Not exactly born to be a manifesto of great cinema, it’s still a beautiful film, raw and revolting as it should be, only hindered by mediocre dubbing and certainly not deserving of the many negative criticisms it has received. In any case, the book is something else entirely.

The creature of Roddy Frantz (a surname, a program) and Robert Goldstein came out with two jaw-dropping records (because even "Early Damage," no kidding, is no joke...). 4 and a half for this.
Urge Overkill: Jesus Urge Superstar
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
I find myself reassessing an album I never truly valued from a band I never fully appreciated. And I almost come to prefer these raw and unrefined U.O. to the tireless seekers of the perfect power-pop formula of recent years. "Noisy songs" that are worn out, cacophonous, and disheveled. Produced by Albini.

    19 jul 14
I recommend the EP 'Stull'...beautiful. I love that EP. Let's say it's the only release by U.O. that borders on being essential, for me. The others didn't appeal to me much, except for the latest one 'Exit The Dragon', which is quite nice...but nothing compared to 'Stull'..
  • Lao Tze

I still like it, Exit The Dragon is nice too, on the other hand Saturation has always left me indifferent, the sound is too polished in the studio, lacking spontaneity.
Utopia: RA
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
Things more than good on side A, with exquisite Pop Rundgrenian craft jewelry. Epic is the second side, amidst the pathos of "Hiroshima" and the unlikely conceptual journey of a suite that does not tire but entertains, between solemn guitar sounds and truly remarkable instrumental ideas.
Impressive how much of Le Orme's sound there is in "Afterwards"... I can't even imagine how many times Tagliapietra must have listened to this record. Which is beautiful in its own right, not comparable to what will come later but discernible in every nuance. For many bands, it would have already been a peak.

5 is a lot, in my opinion. However, I agree completely about the Orme; I've always thought the same.
  • hjhhjij
    7 oct 13
I would also stop at 4 for this, but can you imagine me complaining about a 5 to VDGG? And then, apart from "Afterwards," which is already a masterpiece, there are "Necromancer" and "Octopus," no joke. It's totally plausible that Le Orme listened to these guys a lot; after all, Hammill is also the one who will translate Felona e Sorona into English a few years later.
  • Lao Tze
    7 oct 13
It's a 5 very different from the one that (rightfully) goes to the subsequent ones. I have come to love this album even in its imperfections, which at times are quite evident. But as far as Hammill is concerned, given how these pieces showcase a pivotal phase in the evolution of his style, I find this is an album that cannot be overlooked.
When people say, "it was better before"... not really, this Vasco here annoys me just as much as the current one. The album only holds up a little thanks to "Albachiara" and "La Strega," but the rest is incredibly boring. I remember that song about his military service that was just a drip-drip of agony. The best Rossi (which is like saying: the least stinky shit) is somewhere between "Siamo Solo Noi" and "Vado Al Massimo."

Yes, a few funny and silly pieces in a "it's just us" style were thrown in at the beginning/mid-career (before the '90s, in short).. but these are just little songs, of no musical value, of foolish pastimes. Meanwhile, the rest of the output in every period of his career is even harmful.

Wall Of Voodoo: Call Of The West
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
"Mexican Radio" the manifesto, "Factory" and the title track are the lyrical-artistic-visionary peaks. Saying it's a flagship of the IRS catalog is almost an insult; saying that (for me and perhaps not just me) it stands in the Top Ten of the decade is legitimate; saying it's a Masterpiece is the sacred truth.
White Noise: An Electric Storm
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
Pioneering proto-electronic sounds produced by a "scientist" of vibrations (David Vorhaus) + two technicians from the BBC: various noises, breaths and sighs, orgasmic whimpers. The result (the "storm") is shocking to say the least, for 1969.
Wigwam: Fairyport

Finnish from 1971, brilliant performers of a prog halfway between symphonic and Canterbury, with an emphasis on piano and organ reminiscent of Procol Harum. Demanding listening.

Witchcraft: Witchcraft
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
In fact, this album wasn't entirely Sabbath-like - because while some tracks definitely remind you of them... others don't at all, and they sound much more like UFO, Wishbone Ash, even Bad Company, especially the guitar solos, and all the '70s English hard rock. Everything sounds like it did 40 years ago, but it sounds so good...

I just downloaded it. Damn, we’re off to a good start. And deep down I already know it’s going to suck, huh. After seeing the last Magic in the Moonlight two weeks ago, all I do is watch his films to remind myself how good he was. But every now and then, to wake myself from the dream, I also watch the announced crap that I’ve missed. Although, to be honest, I didn’t mind Midnight in Paris too much (except for the ending, which was wrapped up almost worse than the aforementioned mitm).

beautiful photograph - for Americans and for those who enjoy masturbating in front of this postcard Rome. Everything feels fake and forced here. From the "jokes"... to the photograph, indeed. The silver lining is that he will never be able to make a film worse than this, even if he wanted to.
(different cover from the original edition) Not my favorite phase of YMO, still too focused on Germany, but you can already get to track 4 just for the lyrics of "La Femme Chinoise," which is poetry. And indeed it was written by a poet. A TRUE poet, not just to say...
Yngwie Malmsteen: Trilogy

The last one I managed to listen to in full and considered with a minimum of seriousness... I remember there was that kind of suite, with the same name, that with some effort could be listened to, a lot of skill involved, but above all, I remember that crazy trash of the video for "You Don't Remember...", with him throwing the guitar in the air...

I recommend (firstly) a spiritual and physical preparation. This is sonic terrorism, nothing less. Of course, I've heard harder, angrier, heavier stuff, but never a BESTIALITY of this level. They still scare me, like (but for different reasons) the Fushitsusha of Haino Keiji. Boris are among the very few who have reaped the fruits of this seminal phase for rock in Japan, definitely the ones who do it best today. But they are greatly broadening the influences.

I received it this morning, ordered thanks to this definition. I liked it, but I don’t hear any sonic terrorism. For instance, the latest Swans album is 10 times louder. Maybe you meant live? The record is nice, but it doesn’t seem to contain any particular difficulties.
