But how can you not like early Elton John? Just think, Fripp wanted him in KC, how do you see that?

I know... but good old Fripp, as soon as he heard him sing, didn't consider him suitable; but aside from that, since Brian Ferry was also rejected, Elton John is one of those singers who for me are neither fish nor flesh, like Leo Sayer, too close to pop forms, and apart from a couple of songs, I really don't think he's that great...

And to think that here is one of his absolutely most beautiful songs, the greatest piano-vocal performance of his career... Too bad the rest of the album "is a bit throwaway."

    Inconceivable cover, it's true
  • Indeed... listening to the concluding "Tickin'" while holding the album cover featuring a 1974 Elton with a smile oozing cocaine and the excitement of a nerd who made it, is a jarring contradiction.
"Tickin'" drastically raises the value of this album, transforming it from more than decent to essential: the final seven sublime minutes, especially in the six "bridges" between verse and chorus, where Elton brings to life the madness, alienation, repression, and bipolarity of the protagonist, taking with his right hand wondrous bursts of disordered and furious notes, while the left keeps ticking (tickin'...) its soft and relentless rhythm.
Not everything is perfect... the synthesizer embellishments in the third verse/bridge/chorus section are superfluous... Children of their time inevitably: in '74 the synth was the obligatory toy to involve in arrangements for any producer. And even Elton's voice would have gained more effectiveness if it had been kept a decibel or two lower, deeper in the mix with the superb piano, the true protagonist of the piece, even if the lyrics and Elton's interpretation don’t hold back.

Well, here we have "Ticking," one of the most beautiful pieces written by Elton. I agree about the cover..

Let’s say that the real horribilis period begins here because, like it or not, "Jump Up" and "Two Low for Zero," although rather lackluster (the latter is actually a passable little disc), were more dignified.

Come on, it's been 16 years that he’s been making almost nothing but good, if not excellent, records.
