R.E.M.: Out Of Time
CD Audio I have it ★★★
I consider Murmur one of the most beautiful albums of the '80s (and beyond..) and in general I really love quite a few of their things. But this album has never really made me jump out of my seat...Half a point more thanks to "Country Feedback."

This is the album that marks a turning point in the discography of the Athens boys; their definitive consecration. They achieve this by recording the poppiest album of their career up to that point, introducing acoustic elements that would become predominant in the subsequent "Automatic for the People." The video for "Shiny Happy People," which features Stipe duetting with Kate Pierson from the B-52s, remains a true anthem of unrestrained joy... As the title of the work suggests, a timeless masterpiece.

I like it much more than Green (except for "You Are The Everything," which remains one of their most beautiful songs for me), but I still believe that the best lies in the less poppy tracks, so yes, Country Feedback, but also Low, Half a World Away, Me in Honey where Pierson gives an exceptional contribution... great album, for sure.

As for Green, their first major label work, R.E.M. came from a very prolific period; from 1983 to 1988, they released six albums. It’s inevitable that it was an album written in a rush, which nonetheless contains some magnificent performances, "World Leader Pretend" being the standout. With Out of Time, things change radically; over two years pass since the previous one, they have more time to "fine-tune" and as a logical consequence, the album we know comes out of it.

I share Silas's opinion, I’ve never been crazy about it overall either; it has some great songs (Country Feedback I confirm, the best, but also Me in Honey, Low, as Lao says, and of course Losing My Religion. With Automatic for the People, they will make a huge leap by recording what I consider their best album alongside New Adventures in Hi-Fi, for me. You Are the Everything from Green is stunning, yes Lao.

And what if I tell you that I love Monster? :D Anyway, yes, I agree with you guys, even though I like Green muuuuuch more than this one..

Dear Silas Lang, you're opening a door that's already ajar for me... Monster is their most "ferocious" album, a response to the Seattle sound that was so trendy at that time. With the heartfelt dedication to Kurt Cobain in Let Me In... They are one of my absolute musts, and I disregard nothing of theirs...

Delicious album. The only downside is that crap "Can't Get there from Here."

I don't love R.E.M., Michael Stipe with his poses kind of annoys me, but I consider this album to be one of the band’s best works. If I had to save four of their works from the flames, I would definitely save this one.

I, on the other hand, really love some of their albums, especially the first EP, then "Murmur," and this one, and despite many hating it, "Monster." Stipe doesn't do anything for me; he doesn't come across as pretentious, I don't know! I HATE U2, though!

I would save Murmur, not Monster.

Of course. Anyway, I also detest Bono, and Sting is climbing up my personal list of annoying people.

Well, the Police never told me a damn thing either… what the hell?!? Yeah, I don’t really like the sting either.

Silas, the Police would have never told you a damn thing, but what a trio! Technically exceptional and also innovative, they were among the first to step away from that historically imposing and pathos-laden rock, moving towards a clear and detached reinterpretation, infused with fresh pop sounds. A true overcoming of the ancient rock sufferings and the typical yearning for freedom of the '70s.

Never been a fan of theirs, quite the opposite. But this album literally kicks ass. No Ska, no Reggae, no concessions to pop, just 22 shards of pure, raw, and noisy Hardcore Punk. And it's done right. It makes me furious like a beast when I think about their other works that are pretty mediocre to me...

I’ve always been a fan of theirs… and this album is the best in their discography.
Born from the ashes of Beat Of The Earth, a dark yet immense psychedelic band from the second half of the '60s, this 1975 album was a masterpiece of lunar folk/country songs. Bucolic psychedelia as if the '60s and the Summer of Love had never passed. But the quality and beauty of these songs make one overlook the lack of innovation in this album.

Even "Lifemask," the one after, deserves mention... and "Flat Baroque and Berserk" is excellent too. For me, however, the most beautiful remains this one. Unrepeatable.

I always listen to it. Acoustic with Dylan/Jethro Tull influences. Really very engaging.

The vote could easily be either 5 or 1... anyway, since I've restored a bit of apparent order to my life, I haven't dared to listen to this album again. Trout Mask Replica, in certain respects, seems like Please Please Me compared to this...

Absolutely true. And that's why I definitely prefer a masterpiece like "Cats and Dogs." But also "Accelerator."

I've really been enjoying listening to trout lately... can you find this for a low price on Amazon? Like something similar to Metal Machine Music?

The trout sometimes goes down smooth, fun, and light like a beer; at other times, I just can't listen to it personally! :D hj, Cats & Dogs I love it!

Thank you, no no...not like metal machine music. But it's pure chaos...like a croaky and off-tempo blues recorded on one channel, and on the other channel trails and trails of noise that come and go in the mix and overshadow everything, then little organs popping up wherever they feel like it, etc., etc., etc...a mess.

the classic record that you either break in half or cherish dearly.............a lot depends on your mental state at the moment. I haven't listened to it in years, and I'll hardly listen to it again, but it's definitely an album that marks certain memories of the past...that must remain just memories. Anyway, it’s an album that needs to be listened to, perhaps to break it in half....
