J Mascis: Several Shades of Why
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
Man, this album enchanted me a couple of years ago. I'm listening to it again today, and I find it damn beautiful. J disconnects and becomes the songwriter...

J Mascis has always been a fine songwriter, even when he buried melodies under guitar distortions.

Indeed! As they themselves defined it at the time of the first three masterpieces: EAR BLEEDIN' COUNTRY...

I agree, great album. And the following one ("Tied to a Star") I find even better. A true gem.
Janis Joplin: Pearl
Vinile I have it ★★★★
The best of Joplin, the most successful album. A little gem. And then the voice, a pure mix of heroin and southern comfort. 4.5.

Old glories.
After leaving the RHCP in '92, Frusciante sinks into heroin, mental illness, becomes a recluse, and between the occasional pear, records these delusions on a rudimentary 4-track tape, balancing between ragged folk, delirium, various out-of-tuneness, psychedelia, and psychopathy. A beautiful album. Perhaps his only great record. It hurts... damn, this music hurts so much...

You described it very well, Silas; however, he’s also come up with some great ones afterwards for me.

Hehehe... I get to the second one, which, however, is way too delirious! But it has some great tracks ["Height Down" with the late River Phoenix above all]. Then, in my opinion, it has become a bit too "easy," little songs, at least for me... and he doesn't have the voice for little songs, he. Anyway, de gustibus. I'm off to work, in spite of Patatraccolo...

Well, immediately I think of the empyrean where there aren't exactly any pop songs, huh? :D
A great pop album. Perhaps the only major record he's released during his post-bug career. Rating: 4.5

maybe also Imagine and Walls & Bridges, come on. Double Fantasy is penalized more for Yoko's songs than anything else; if it had been an album by just John, it would probably have been his last masterpiece.

Imagine is still good but it convinces me less than this one, while Walls and Bridges, apart from a couple of tracks, didn’t grab me at all. Well, tastes are tastes!

P.S. by Yoko Ono, I like an album: "Fly"
Johnny Thunders: So Alone
Vinile I have it ★★★★★
Tears disc for me. After releasing two of the coolest albums ever [the self-titled by the New York Dolls and L.A.M.F. with the Heartbreakers], Johnny delivers his third masterpiece in '79, his first solo effort. And, to be fair, the last one where he still manages to maintain a semblance of stability before his life and career get completely consumed by too much "living the Rock n' Roll"....
Jonathan Wilson: Gentle Spirit

One of my favorite albums of 2011
Joy Division: Closer

There would be nothing to say about this LP. It's like discovering hot water. One of the most beautiful records of all time, in my opinion.

I like Joy Division just fine. Of course, they're incredible. But if you dare to voice any criticism, like I did years ago in a forum, they will crush you. Some fans (not you) have zero objectivity, and they won't accept any objections. It’s either musical geniuses or those who criticize just don’t get it. That's what makes me feel left-handed about them.

they grind you down, they really do.. some JD tunes sometimes resemble those stubborn prog fundamentalists, haha.. I think it’s because, in the end, listening to them has changed the lives of quite a few, as is natural... then of course, there are also the many Ian necrophiles who talk a big game and have never read a text... they've always given me huge feelings, lyrics and music equally, but I wouldn't put them in the small group of those who have changed my life. Among those from Manchester back in the day, I’ve always preferred The Fall - maybe because by nature I’m more erratic than depressed..? Bah;-

The worst are the jazz talibans, almost like those of Zappa.

Well, I like Zappa, I have about thirty of his albums... but if someone doesn't like him, I won't shoot them! Personally, I’m not a fan of any band, at least not beforehand. If a band I like put out a mediocre album, I would say so without hesitation. There are some bands I've even stopped following, keeping only the good albums :)

Absolutely. For example, the latest albums by bands I love like Melvins and Boris have really disappointed me... but I'm saying it! P.S. I agree about the jazz-talibans and zappa-talibans. Even though I love certain jazz and the Mothers of Invention...

Certain fans of JD sometimes resemble those irreducible fundamentalist prog fans -----> I confirm! I am one of those fans, and I must say that, although I listen to a lot of other music as well, I absolutely cannot stand those who speak ill of JD. Immense.

A little gem, for sure. Along with the mate World Shut Your Mouth. I've never understood what was so great about the Teardrop Explodes. That damn Killimanjaro has never meant a thing to me. Who knows.

I Teardrop Explodes, one of the most "hard to interpret" bands in history. When people talk about them, it’s always a "half" something. "Kilimanjaro" a "half" masterpiece (for me it WAS a masterpiece, there's a huge slice of Liverpool pop in there: an album, an era), "Wilder" a "half" misstep (for me it WAS a real misstep, Julian had just started with the acids and hadn’t fully processed them yet...)
