Well, after THOSE first four positions, there could also be Pippo Franco and Umberto Smaila, and it would still be a fantastic ranking...

That Tom Waits so high gives me a huge sense of justice :) Too bad for that Tim Buckley, whom I personally prefer even to Waits, and that's saying something, only nineteenth. Anyway, great ranking. Do you know Nick Drake?

Oh no! I've only heard it mentioned.

So I highly recommend you listen to his 3 albums: "Five Leaves Left" (1969), "Bryter Layter" (1970), and especially "Pink Moon" (1972). He was probably one of the top 10 songwriters of all time, sadly marked by a tragic fate. A must-listen ;)

Fripp? You know I suggest Fripp in every ranking of this kind where there's no truth? :D

If you mean Robert Fripp, I left him out simply because this is a ranking of solo singer-songwriters only. I have King Crimson pretty high up in the ranking of the best bands of the '70s...

  • here he is elton.rightly so....
well, many of the tastes align with mine.
I love oldfield. that triptych that goes from tubular, passes through hergest, and ends with ommadawn, I must have listened to it to exhaustion.
and my favorite is definitely ommadawn.

I haven’t specifically listened to all of their works, but that percentage of albums and pieces that I know is enough for me to somewhat consecrate them all.

  • Yes, it's true. It applies to me too. For example, for Zappa. I've listened to only a few albums, but they were enough to understand the level. Do you know any albums that can compare with Hot Rats? His discography is huge, so for a deep dive, it wouldn't be bad to play it safe...

In fact, he's up there for a reason... No one quite like him (I believe) has had such a prolific and satisfying career for others' ears.

Well, yes, in my opinion he fits in too. A nice mix of soul and disco at the dawn, not yet reached the cheesy levels.

..if I were him, I'd put Townes Van Zandt there.

    Interesting, I'll get it.
