I see the addition of the Phideaux, I must say that the latest "Snowtorch" is really well done, I think it's my favorite.

@ProgRock: many people have told me that the latest one is beautiful, since I detest mp3s, I’m eagerly waiting for my trusted "dealer" to get it (number7 had to pick it up abroad and having to recharge my postpay – given my money-sucking habit – terrifies me).

You are absolutely right to wait for the original disc. By the way, I'm waiting for September to buy quite a bit of stuff; Emi will have amazing discounts on albums by Hammill, Vdgg, Jethro Tull, Eno, Sylvian, Gong, Hawkwind, Tangerine Dream, Hatfield And The North, etc. (most of them at 5 euros each, others at 9.90). I won't let the missing ones get away, even though I already have quite a lot of the originals from this offer. There will also be some titles from Inside Out; my "dealer" has confidently informed me about this series of offers. We'll see what comes of it; it will be possible to check any CD sales website! :)

As for Phideaux or other recent ones that are very expensive, before buying I occasionally do a preview here progstreaming.com

Hawkwind - what a band - already plundered this year far and wide: I’m going to chew my liver (except for Hall of the Mountain, which they told me was out of print).

I bought everything I was missing from Jethro at the newsstand (2 CDs for 12 euros). There’s already something available from Tangerine; in fact, today I snagged Phaedra for 5 euros. However, honestly, I find them a bit of a tough listen...

Beautiful, it indeed strikes one the high presence of Phideaux, an excellent artist, but maybe a tad out of place with the immense icons of the rest of the chart. Nevertheless, his serious proposal is much better than the subsequent drim tiater and even the porkiupin tri, which I just don't see here (that's my judgment, mind you).

You know, it's actually a ranking influenced (too much, perhaps, for such a definitive title as "greatest of all time") by what I've been listening to lately. You're right about Dream/Porcupine, although (in my opinion) they've done great things, I wouldn't have included them when thinking clearly. It's official, I'm "moldable" ;)

You know, it’s actually a ranking influenced (too much, perhaps, for a definitive title like "the best ever") by what I've been listening to lately (Phideaux/Greenslade). You're right about Dream/Porcupine, even though (in my opinion) they did some great stuff under cooler circumstances, I wouldn't have included them. It's official, I'm "malleable" ;)

...well, it's also official that the heat is driving me crazy, sorry for the double comment...

It's true that "Hall of the Mountain Grill" and "Warrior on the Edge of Time" are out of print, I haven't been able to get them yet, I'm also getting that Jethro one from the newsstand;).

Jargon and brainiac, I can understand (and agree) for the DTs, but why the Trees too?

But I don't mind extending the term Progressive to include Porcupine Tree, Anathema (and the various artists of Kscope), Mars Volta, or other recent bands or some from the Prog-Metal realm (Pain Of Salvation, Opeth, Riverside, the same DT, etc.). In fact, I see it as very welcome, even though it diverges from the original meaning. After all, today the term Prog is represented by the aforementioned bands in terms of "popularity," which I don't see as a bad thing. In fact, some people start listening to Porcupine Tree and then, perhaps paradoxically, delve into all branches of Progressive music, both historical and contemporary. So, I welcome them (in my opinion). After all, even in the '70s, there were bands like Kansas and Pavlov's Dog, for which the term Progressive was considered relative, but even today they are rightly included in the discussion with full title.

@progknight94: you know what I’m saying, progknight94? You’re absolutely right, I’ve trimmed down the list by cutting out the crossover-prog/tech-prog and also the umhhh...fusion-prog (sorry, Al) and I have to say the ranking now looks "cleaner" to me.

Anyway, yes, it's better this way now, definitely more pure, we just need to add the Van Der Graaf.

However, if we're being a bit picky :D I think magmas can also be considered fusion :)

I miss Van, I have 2 CDs that I've barely listened to, but it's their fault; they have truly ugly covers that didn't entice me!
I think I’ll see them live - at least two of them - at the prog fest in Veruno on September 2nd along with Arti/Mestieri... and on the 3rd I’ll go to the crossover-prog with Riverside/Anathema. Just to let you know.

Well, I think the cover of Pawn Hearts is stunning, for example! But which CDs do you have? I believe the best ones to start with are H to He and, of course, Pawn Hearts (especially the latter if you like suites).

I think the second series of albums is beautiful too (try it if you don't like the first one).

I have the one with the spray can (brrr...) and the one with the electric discharge. I'll retrieve them as listens, but if I were a VanDerGraffo, I would have sued whoever proposed the artwork! ;)

Prog is a big family, and I believe it's right to include jazz-rock, fusion, Zeuhl, Canterbury, symphonic, RIO, etc., etc. Magma are Zeuhl, not least because they invented it, placing them in fusion is restrictive considering the broader and diverse values of Zeuhl.

Of course, VDGG cannot be missed, but all the greats from Canterbury also deserve a place in the Olympus.

the spray can is obscene, but the one with the shock is an artwork made by the same person as Nursry and Foxtrot :)

I didn't know, but then it's not random that those of Genesis have always left me a bit perplexed, so much so that in the prog scene I discovered/appreciated them last. I prefer the immediacy of fantasy/sci-fi covers to those of Yes/Rush/Greenslade. An imagery that's closer to my own.

But I think the covers of Nursery Crymes and Foxtrot are stunning (I also find the one for Wind & Wuthering very evocative).

@jdv666: "But the covers of nursery and foxtrot are stunning in my opinion." For goodness' sake, they have their charm, but give me a suspended planet/ greenish crevasses/ alien sunsets/ irregular mountains and you’ve made me happy and foolish ;).

If the term Progressive makes sense, it's thanks to bands like Magma, who definitely deserve it, and it's better to keep the Kobaïans happy :)
