Non è una classifica stabile :)
Viscerali, disturbanti, magici...
Brillanti, eterei, sfarzosi...
Grandiosi, grandi, grandissimi!
Fondamentali, Fripp-dipendenti, in evoluzione continua.
Polistrumentisti eccezionali, fantastici intrecci vocali!

Come to the Sabbath!

Nice, huh, but what about Genesis?

Oooops... I didn't know where to put them and in the end I didn't put them at all! I'll take care of it right away :P

Now it’s really beautiful, all the classics are there; if you want, I can suggest some lesser-known but very interesting bands.

Gladly! Uh, I might as well add the Goblins! :D

Good job, Goblin is a great band. Among the "minor" groups of English prog, there are, if you don't already know them, Camel (I recommend Mirage, Snow Goose, and Moonmadness), Renaissance (just pick randomly from the period '72-'78, you'll find plenty of gems), Comus (First Utterance), and High Tide (Sea Shanties and their self-titled album). Which Italian bands do you know besides PFM? Ah, I almost forgot, do you know the Canterbury groups?

Nice ranking! I'll also leave some recommendations for minor prog: the self-titled album by Tonton Macoute, This is ... Gracious! by Gracious!, Time is... by Raw Material, If I by If, and the self-titled album by Spring.

I had heard of Camel, but I had never listened to anything... Thanks for the tips, I will definitely check them out along with the ones you recommended. I should also delve into Le Orme and Banco del Mutuo Soccorso to stay in Italy! ^^

Thank you too, Federzan, slowly I will go and look for everyone! Apart from the fact that prog is a huge world, and above all to be listened to (from my point of view) at the "right" moments!

True, it's an endless genre, you'll have a lot to discover and listen to.
I join fedezan in recommending Gracious, whose self-titled debut I also suggest.

@hjhhjij: I read your profile and wanted to compliment you! You're young but you really know your Music with a capital M, unlike 99% of your peers!

In Italy, in addition to Banco and Orme, there are many other highly valued groups: Locanda delle Fate (self-titled album), Biglietto per l'inferno, Metamorfosi (Inferno), Museo Rosembach (Zarathustra), just to name a few.
    P.S. The Area are missing!
Anyway, with a few additions it will become a very good ranking!

Thank you, indeed most of my peers have a pathetic musical culture, but there are some who know music with a capital M (even here on Debaser); of course, we are few compared to the hordes of Tokio Hotel fans.

I endorse Mr. Money's intervention, especially regarding the Area and La Locanda delle fate.

More than anything for 666, which I consider a fantastic work that comes very close to this genre, but it's just my personal opinion... I know that there are still many groups missing, especially from Canterbury, which is a movement that interests me a lot, and the Italian ones. Gentle Giant is also missing, whom I am listening to these days.

Personally, I would also include the Audience of "The House On The Hill." Even though they are not among the leading representatives of the genre, I believe they are quite underrated.

Here they are, the Gentle Giant, spectacular, right?

  • Tony Montana

I listened to the first three, and I was immediately left speechless... Great voice and sublime harmonies, many instruments used with mastery... And it’s becoming increasingly difficult to build the ranking! ^^

No doubt about it, you have spectacular taste. Gentle Giant are wonderful; of the three you've listened to, I adore the first two, the third one is very nice but not a masterpiece, acquiring is immense.
And now you have to listen to Octopus: pure bliss!

A ranking I really don’t like, seeing Van der Graaf and Crimson and other bands under a group that isn’t prog in first place, I don’t know…. You’ve included very few Italians, PFM has been an average band, definitely not among the best in Italy.

put Yes and not Yepes, it shows that you don't know the Colombian prog from '76! Mario Yepes - Wikipedia

Asd, I missed the grand Colombian prog parentheses!!!
@ Rocky: of course, seeing Jethro "above" VDGG, KC, Yes, etc. may raise some eyebrows, but for me the top positions are all on the same level, neither more nor less. With bands of this caliber, too :)

Tony, on April 4th I will enjoy the Van der Graaf concert! I can't wait, it will be a show.

Yes, I was aware that they will be in Italy in April... On the 7th they will be in Milan, which is more accessible for me!! It's definitely an opportunity not to be missed!

I like it even more this way, a wonderful first place :)

Great ranking, especially VDGG in first place! The only ones I'm not particularly crazy about are Yes, but it's a matter of personal taste... If you haven't heard anything yet, I also recommend some works by Robert Wyatt (former Soft Machine) as a solo artist, particularly Rock Bottom and End of an Ear.

  • Tony Montana

@jdv666: indeed, I’ve been meaning to dive deeper into that genius Wyatt for a while now; for the moment, I’m stuck on Moon In June and Calyx (Hatfield), both of which are spine-chilling. Maybe something from Matching Mole as well; do you have any recommendations?
@hjhhjij: yeah, there’s no denying it, I just love VDGG too much!

  • hjhhjij
    31 mar 11
Tony, the first of the Mole is a splendid record, one you absolutely must listen to ;) like the two titles mentioned by jdv of the Wyatt solo. The Van der Graaf are unique; even the latest album (at over sixty years old!) is said to be an excellent work (I haven't listened to it yet).
