    eheheh, and what do we care if they lose pure art like "Learning to live," the manifesto of the genre, which alone justifies the first position of the DT? In the end, they set the coordinates of the genre, no doubt about it. Of course, they have declined over the years; I'm not a die-hard fan.

    Well, look, federock, I’m not an expert in dt like you guys, but from what I know, they’ve always seemed to me nothing more than a hyper-technical mix of Yes, Pink Floyd, Queensrÿche, Rush, etc. They were certainly among the first of the so-called prog metal, but I don’t feel like considering them revolutionary or innovative. Anyway, I respect those who love them even if I really don’t get it :)

    They certainly have influences, that's for sure, but everyone does; however, did they really create something new or innovative? Progressive metal owes a lot to them: Rush are immense but they are something else, the same goes for 'Ryche and Fates, both more metal. Yes and Floyd, I love them, but they weren't doing prog metal, of course. They might have laid the groundwork for certain blends, but D.T. made it explicit in metal like no one else before, in my opinion. I return the utmost respect, of course, to anyone who thinks differently, but these seem to me to be quite objective considerations. Whether or not people like D.T., that's obviously completely personal.

    Indeed, I talked about a blend, certainly yes and pf are not metal and the rushes are different, however, I still see them as a hardened mix of all these and others, which in fact might have brought something new as well. Anyway, I stick to my position just as you will stick to yours... best regards.

    No no, zero! Fates Warning in first place, without them Dream Theater would still be there doing Rush covers with Charlie Dominici, or worse, Chris Collins with the microphone in hand. By the way, today Giovannone Petrucci turns 43, happy birthday! :D

      I only know the beautiful Damnation from the early days, due to my rejection of growl, but since I've recently discovered that I have an album with small doses of growl that I enjoy listening to (they're called Rain Paint), who knows, maybe I'll explore Opeth more thoroughly. The second band I only know by name, for the same reasons.

      perfectly radioactive: for me, in recent years the best have been Pain of Salvation, Opeth, Meshuggah, and especially Haken. If we even want to include Riverside in this ranking!

      Having heard one of their albums, they don't grab me and I don't know how much they fit into the genre... I've just edited it, anyway, adding P.Tree who aren't exactly in the genre but also don't stray too far from it...
