Joy Division have very little New Wave. Cure too high.

How would you define them, excuse me? Or do you distinguish between new-wave (more synth-pop oriented) and post-punk (more hardcore)?

No, but there is also the harder New Wave without synthpop. Although they are usually two genres that go hand in hand (New Wave and Post Punk), Joy Division preferred to be influenced by Gothic Rock rather than New Wave itself.

But doesn't goth also always stem from new wave? Like Siouxsie, PIL, etc., who are sometimes also classified as dark wave? However, I would say that the JD influenced new wave more than they were influenced, since they were among the first.

Ahah yes, but in a ranking of the best New Wave bands, it would make more sense to see Joy Division lower down compared to other artists. Not because they are inferior, but because they don’t fully belong to the genre in question. Do you see what I mean?

Yes, your point is very clear, but there was also a temporal aspect. At that time, many groups that were only marginally part of the new wave were included in the mix simply due to timing. Moreover, by buying their records, I was convinced I was purchasing new wave.

Jargon, I'm surprised you didn't include the Ludus, forgot about them?

Forgotten Ludus. Indeed very nice also for their almost jazz-like intrusions and the carefree spirit of their music. As if they wanted to make a Canterbury Sound statement within the new wave. Very interesting.

In fact, Canterbury Sound is the most intriguing (Caravan and Camel, I would say) and exotic in the style of the Monochrome Set. Ah, I almost forgot... full support for XTC at the top of the list.

True, this was a bit of a work in progress but then I abandoned it, so many names are missing and some are not in the right place. In fact, the TH after the Icehouse really don't belong there... sooner or later I'll sit down to modify and complete it. Thank you.
