While waiting for the next album, "Octaviarum", which will be released at the beginning of June, let’s enjoy their latest studio masterpiece, "Train of Thought", which I believe translates to "Thread of thought" in English.
Well... overall there’s not much to say: it’s simply fantastic, it mesmerized the audience upon its release, they have once again shown themselves to be out-of-this-world! An astonishing completeness, they managed to integrate their already chameleonic music with a new style, the dark and heavy style of metal (their genre was already defined as "Progressive metal" from the start, so the novelty I'm talking about is nothing other than the addition of power guitar, heavily distorted chords, eerie vocals... in short, heavy, power, speed, gothic metal!), confirming themselves on the crest of the wave. And to whom does the greatest credit go if not to them, the five guys from Long Island?
To Labrie, who despite his age and despite what was said about him "having dropped off" was able to captivate once again with his high notes, his passion but also with his distortions and shouts; to Myung, indeed there are no solos by him (unforgettable those in "Metropolis" and in "The Dance of Eternity") and perhaps he "rested" a bit compared to his capabilities but he once again stood out with his pounding themes and his scales at the forefront; to Rudess, of whom I have spoken often but every word seems incomprehensible if you don't listen to him; to Portnoy, who, with yet another time change, with yet another roll and the constant use of the double-triple pedal, made people think, as has been the case for years: "Where does this come from?..."; and especially to him, Petrucci, my idol, my example, the one who composes, plays, sings, but more than anything else, moves, leaves you speechless, gets you pumped. Unreachable.
I think I've said it all or almost… I have no sentences to conclude, I can only repeat once more that DT are superior to everyone and that "Train of Thought" is one of the many demonstrations they have presented and will hopefully continue to do for years and years to come. So what are you waiting for? Get it and... prepare to enter the Theater of Dreams.
Stream of Consciousness: 11 minutes of pure music that enter forcibly into Dream Theater’s history.
The album closes with 'In the Name of God,' probably the most beautiful song on the album, where indeed all the members give their best.
The musicians' exhibitionism has become something abstract on the album; in fact, Petrucci's solos are indeed very fast but lack pathos.
Despite the usual mammoth durations typical of DT, the songs are the right length and contain some well-structured moments, but the ideas are now exhausted.
Everyone’s entitled to their tastes—but veteran fans disowning the band baffles me.
'Stream Of Consciousness' is the most beautiful track on the entire album.
If the New York band had distinguished itself for originality and versatility, we now face blurred imitations of Tool and Korn.
The album, while showcasing some valid episodes, proves to be a low blow for longtime fans but could attract a new audience.
"With 'Vacant' I feel the real Dream Theater: truly beautiful and touching... melancholic and even heartbreaking."
"Train of Thought falls into the 'trap' of metal, with too many solos and high rhythms... absolutely not their style."
