Second album for the Swedish band, which with this work veers towards more doom atmospheres and rhythms.
Compared to the previous release, the guitars are darker, slower, and more powerful, the drums are more present and greater emphasis is placed on the powerful and melodic growl and the spoken word of the singer Anders Jacobsson, while the contributions of the female vocalist Lisa Johansson are much reduced in number and duration.
The album opens with the splendid "A Scenery Of Loss" and continues with the furious "Daylight Misery", then moves on to "The Apostasy Canticle", which is the most doom song of the entire work. After the interlude of "Expostulation", we arrive at "Heaven Laid in Tears (Angels' Lament)", the most furiously melancholic piece in which Lisa Johansson's voice is used the most. This is followed by "The Abhorrent Rays" and "The Everlasting Scar", the most diverse songs of the album that remind me of Katatonia. The beautiful "Death, Come Near Me" closes the album, showcasing the group's compositional skills.
An album with dark and melancholic atmospheres, achieved also thanks to the background keyboards, offering an hour of good music, which I believe will please fans of the genre.
"When a band is good, there is no denying it—they can only be liked."
"Oh Death, come near me, save me from this empty, cold world!" – the most pathos-laden moment of the entire record.
