Douglas Noël Adams (1952 - 2001) writer, screenwriter, and humorist, is best known for the famous "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy". Initially created for radio broadcasts, it was then skillfully converted into a series of science-fiction novels, endowed with an inexhaustible and irresistible sense of comic-paradoxical humor, defined by critics as 'surreal-bizarre'. Douglas was primarily a media experimenter, not surprisingly he ventured into various types of productions: scientific essays, music, radio, video games, movies, TV shows (Doctor Who). This unpredictable and unusual work differs significantly from his more famous series, despite being characterized by typical British 'humor' (© 1987 by D. Adams, © 1989 RCS Rizzoli). A humor that is certainly more calibrated and admirably distributed throughout the novel: enigmas, time travel, parapsychology, temporal paradoxes, and much more. Dirk is not the traditional detective; he prefers to use quantum mechanics. At this point, some might ask: "What does Holistic mean?". To dispel any reasonable doubt, I will let Dirk answer directly: "Holistic refers to my personal belief that the organism, and generally any phenomenon that concerns us, is a whole greater than the mere sum of its parts". He believes that fingerprints are useless because the solution to every problem must be sought in the harmony of the whole and not in the triviality of the particular. Causes and effects are often interconnected in an infinitely more subtle and complex way than the banal observation of classic concrete clues might suggest. Even when penniless, Gently never loses heart, always making himself available to help others.

In the adventure full of surprises, together with Dirk we will meet Professor Urban Chronotis-Regius Professor of Chronology, better known as Reg, Richard MacDuff, software developer for WayForward Technologies and friend of Dirk. Odd characters also appear, such as the mysterious Electric Monk with his Horse and the peculiar ghost Gordon Way. Gently will not act in the early pages of the story, but later and with a more than spectacular entrance. Before finishing, I report Dirk's bill (the conversion from old lira to euros was performed by me). 1) Cat retrieval...50 €. 2) Calculation and triangulation of the vectors of the connections of the whole...150 €. 3) Identification of said vectors in the Bahamas, ticket and hotel price...1500 €. 4) Arduous struggle to stem the drying of the brain and tongue caused by the client's persistent skepticism, invigorating drinks...327.50 €. 5) Amount due for saving the human race from total extinction...incalculable. Total (VAT included)...2331.62 €.
