This is the first review scripted like a theater play. The title of the work is: "6 Gods in Search of an Author".
Characters of the play:
- The being who calls himself God (the singer) and believes himself to be God (but no one believes him).
- The being who calls himself God (the Almighty) and believes himself to be God (and everyone believes him, yet I still have some doubts).
- The beings who call themselves God (the band), because with more than three letters they would struggle.
- My friend Thomas, who is the God of metalheads in Cinisello Balsamo, where I live.
- Me, who am not God, but when I managed to get reformed in the army, I did perform a miracle.
- My friend Beppe, who has nothing divine about him, but when it comes to swearing, he is God; in fact, we always applaud when he's done.
FIRST ACT.
The scene takes place in the Milan of the '80s, in a club where a concert by God (the band) is scheduled. From this tour, the live album "Intermission," a thrash-metal masterpiece, will be released. Everything is ready, the first song, "Rainbow in the Dark," starts. The riff sounds familiar, no one moshes yet. Attention is focused on two losers in the audience.
God (my friend Thomas): "I don't understand why these metalheads never mosh at concerts. You see them there, motionless, staring at the stage and nodding."
God (me, enlightened): "Ah."
The second song, "Rock & Roll Children," starts. The guitarist does an excellent job, the melody is perfectly tense, the drums are pumping at their max, but the riff sounds a bit familiar. No one moshes yet. I can't understand if the singer is saying "Motherfucker" or "motherfarmer".
God (the singer, from the stage): "I said Motherfucker, you idiot."
God (me, surprised): "Ah."
The riff of the third song, "King of Rock & Roll," starts, and it also sounds familiar, but all the band members manage to hide it well. God (the singer) screams at the top of his lungs throughout the song. I feel so much like a child of rock & roll now, even if no one is moshing yet.
God (the singer, singing): "We are Rock & Roll! This is Rock & Roll, and I am the King of Rock & Roll!!!"
God (me, enlightened): "Ah."
The fourth song, "We Rock," starts, the riff sounds familiar, and no one moshes yet, also because some metalheads have noticed the familiar riff and begin to murmur. A dense throwing begins towards the stage, some even start to mosh, and I don't understand why the music is over. Many of them don't even realize the concert is over, except those who had already collapsed, because now I can fall asleep. God (my friend Thomas) and I (who am not God, but one never knows), head towards the exit, before the studs come out. As we walk away, I hear God (my friend Beppe) swearing like a sailor, and I don't know which *Expletive* God! he's shouting at, whether at God (the singer), God (the band), God (the Almighty), God (my friend Thomas), or me, also because when Beppe is pissed off and swears, most of the time he's talking to me.
Now, I don't know which of these Gods is the real God, and I don't even know if a God really exists, but I know one thing: every time I come out alive from a metal concert, it’s a miracle. Good life to all.
Tracklist Lyrics and Videos
02 Rainbow in the Dark (04:42)
When there's lightning
You know it always brings me down
Cause it's free and I see that it's me
Who's lost and never found
I cry out for magic
I feel it dancing in the light
It was cold, lost my hold
To the shadows of the night
No sign of the morning coming
You've been left on your own
Like a Rainbow in the Dark
A Rainbow in the Dark
Do your demons
Do they ever let you go
When you've tried do they hide deep inside
Is it someone that you know
You're just a picture
Just an image caught in time
We're a lie you and I
We're words without a rhyme
There's no sign of the morning coming
You've been left on your own
Like a Rainbow in the Dark
Just a Rainbow in the Dark
(Lead/Instrumental)
When I see lightning
You know it always brings me down
Cause it's free and I see that it's me
Who's lost and never found
Feel the magic
I feel it floating in the air
But it's fear and you'll hear it calling you beware
Look Out!
There's no sign of the morning coming
There's no sight of the day
You've been left on your own
Like a Rainbow
Like a Rainbow in the Dark Yeah . . .
You're a Rainbow in the Da a a a a ark
Just a Rainbow in the Dark
No sign of the morning
Just a Rainbow in the Dark
05 Rock 'n' Roll Children / Long Live Rock 'n' Roll / Man on the Silver Mountain (09:40)
06 We Rock (04:55)
You watch their faces
You'll see the traces
Of the things they want to be
But only we can see
They come for killing
They leave and still it seems
The cloud that's left behind
Oh, can penetrate your mind
But sail on, sing a song, carry on
Cause We Rock, We Rock, We Rock, We Rock
We pray to someone
But when it's said and done
It's really all the same
With just a different name
So many voices
All giving choices
If we listen they will say
Oh, we can find the way
But we'll sail on, sing a song, carry on
Cause We Rock, We Rock, We Rock, We Rock
We Rock, We Rock, We Rock, We Rock
We Rock!
We Rock
You watch their faces
You'll see the traces
Of the things they want to be
But only we can see
They come for killing
They leave and still it seems
The cloud that's left behind
Can penetrate your mind
Sail on, sing a song, carry on
Cause We Rock, We Rock, We Rock, We Rock
We Rock, We Rock, We Rock, We Rock
Ride out - stand and shout - carry on
Sail on - Sing your song - carry on
Cause We Rock, We Rock, see how We Rock
We Rock
That's rock
We Rock
We Rock
