Isao Takahata -La storia della principessa splendente
Absolute masterpiece, immense and transcendental, life in its entirety, joy and pain; the escapist attempts and self-deceptions of that wonderful character, Gemma di bambù (along with other equally wonderful supporting characters), are futile; suicide will be inevitable.
Simply sublime pastel style, so many scenes worthy of framing for their pathos, accompanied by a highly inspired Hisaishi. more

Mark Mylod -The Big White
A black comedy set in Alaska starring Robin Williams. A man in financial trouble, who also has a wife we might call completely crazy, decides to try and collect on his brother's life insurance, who has been missing for five years. He literally finds himself surrounded by two eccentric criminals, a stubborn insurance adjuster, and the same brother (as usual, a brilliant Woody Harrelson) who is completely out of his mind and reappears after reading in the newspaper about what was supposed to be his death. Definitely entertaining. A worthy mention goes to the music, which is by Mark Mothersbaugh of Devo. more
Sexwitch -Sexwitch
An incredibly interesting project born from the collaboration between Toy and Natasha Khan aka Bat for Lashes, two artists that I must admit I don't particularly love. With the production of Dan Carey, the band reinterprets six tracks of folk psychedelia from Iran, Morocco, Thailand, and the United States of the seventies. The result is an album with hypnotic sounds, krautrock grooves, and ethereal, obsessive vocals. It somewhat resembles what Goat does, although perhaps here there is a greater quest for sounds and atmospheres that are somehow vintage.

Jonathan Sobol -A Beginner's Guide to Endings
A dark comedy full of interesting insights directed by Jonathan Sobol. A father (Harvey Keitel) who throughout his life has stood out for being absent and spending much of his time embarking on impossible adventures, gambling and betting, commits suicide leaving his children a dramatic revelation: all three will die within a very short time due to complications stemming from an event that occurred in their lives long ago. The news will literally shake the lives of the three siblings and lead them to act and behave in ways they never would have in their lives before, culminating in a final reconciliation with themselves and with life. An explosive film where each character is characterized in a way that could be described as 'extreme.' more
Jake Paltrow -The Good Night
Jake Paltrow's first film features an impressive cast (starting with his sister Gwyneth, along with Martin Freeman, Penelope Cruz, Simon Pegg, and the ever-iconic Danny De Vito) to tell the story of a middle-aged man, once a successful pop star and now reduced to composing jingles for commercials, whose life is in crisis, particularly regarding his relationship with his wife. In order to escape all of this, Gary (Martin Freeman) retreats into dreams where he 'meets' a woman he falls in love with on a recurring basis. This obsession leads him to experiment with various forms of 'lucid dreaming' until he experiences a revelatory blend of dream and reality. The film features a guest appearance by Jarvis Cocker from Pulp. more

Robyn Hitchcock -Robyn Sings
Robyn Hitchcock has always stated that he has three fundamental points of reference: Syd Barrett, of course, John Lennon, and Bob Dylan. At the opening of this album, which turns out to be a double live (the first part recorded in the USA between 1999 and 2000, the second in London in 1996), he says that 'Visions of Johanna' is the song that pushed him to start writing music (indeed, 'Robyn Sings', released on his own label, contains two versions of it). Robyn Hitchcock sings Dylan. What more can we say? Highly recommended for the fans of the former. If you like both: bingo. Noteworthy is the presence of Grant-Lee Phillips in the roster of musicians that are part of Mr. Hitchcock's band.

Death Valley Girls -Street Venom
The only album released so far in 2014 via Burger Records by this group of bad (very bad) girls from Los Angeles, California, who play a garage music infected with psychedelia and acid psychobilly and blues echoes of Gun Club. Sounds that I would ultimately compare to the rock and roll of Night Beats, but 'Street Venom' manages to sound even rawer, becoming at times almost punk. A pure adrenaline rush.

Big Audio Dynamite -This Is Big Audio Dynamite
The first successful album from the band founded by former Clash Mick Jones and Don Letts. A mix of different genres from rock and roll to reggae and funk, culminating in hip-hop, the album is in some ways the true natural evolution of what the Clash's sound was (that is, 'Combat Rock'). If we have to find a flaw, the album does not maintain the same strength from beginning to end and undergoes a kind of gradual decline in intensity that I still notice even after years of listening. It remains a fundamental album for the era. more
